Stumbled on this tonight while looking for cv axle boots somehow.

Astro / Safari - Straight Axle

Looks like they have made a straight axle conversion kit.
Cant find the price anywhere or a link to this page from their site.
Seems like it just got crawled by google and I got lucky on the search.

They've had them for a while and sell them, but they are a call in only order. I know with the bumpers they sell they weld them up on demand so it may be a similar thing. Probably not enough demand to advertise them on the site but they'll likely hook you up if you call in. They are moving warehouses right now so there could be some delays on availability.

They were showing it off a few years ago. You can see the setup in this video at about 7 minutes in. -

Man that SAS'd Astro looks awesome!

I didn't even realize that they were selling them, figured it was mostly a one off deal, you have seen it installed on vans other than their own?

I wasn't sure if they were selling them either, but a guy popped up in one of the facebook groups a couple of weeks ago showing the kit laid out in his driveway that he was working on. He's doing a 350 engine swap at the same time so it's taking him longer. He said he had to call to get his hands on it.

Sweet! I don't do FB at all, would be nice to know what it cost.

It probably depends on what the cost of steel is at the time and if they already have some in stock or not. I know the price went considerably up on the torsion bars that sway-away is making for the astros because the cost of steel went up for them. I got one of the JOR bumpers because they had a sale going, and it took a couple of extra days because the had to weld it up, I'm sure it's similar for these since some of the parts are made in house.

Can you link to the guys FB thread I would love to check it out if hes got a build thread going?

It was just a reply to an existing post, no build thread. I think the original post was asking the typical "how hard is it to convert 2wd to 4wd" question and he posted the kit as an alternative but didn't say much more than the photo and you have to call journey's to get it.

I happen to know the guy... he's in my PNW group. I'll reach out to him.

Looks like he paid about $2k plus shipping, plus he had to source the axle for it. It also involves a bit of mod work and fabrication to the frame. So unless you can do that yourself, that'll cost extra as well.

I've considered just contacting JOR and scheduling to have them install next year... Im sure that won't be inexpensive.

Awesome, it would be good to get some feedback on how it's going for him. There is a PDF on the page that shows the instructions for the install if anyone is curious as to what's involved.

It's interesting, but I find it kinda scary. All that extra weight supported by 4 body bolts. No,I don't consider the front 2 bolts/mounts as "supportive", look at a van when the rad. support mount sections rust out.Body flexes down, sub frame stays pretty much there. I really cannot see it for serious off roading.

I mentioned this thread to him, maybe he will drop in. I do know he's got another project ahead of his van build, but I'm eager to see him get it on the road!
