why did gm put fiberglass leaf springs on the older vans anyway and are they notorious for breaking and sagging

The one thing I liked about Fiber Glass leaf springs is the level ride they gave as apposed to metal leaf springs that raises the rear end in the air a bit. Unfortunately they are notorious for cracking and splinting and why most people will replace them with Metal ones.

i was asking cause mine still has the fiberglass and in good shape and was making sure there dependable and thanks for the info
