A worn piston ring wouldn't really cause an intermittent issue though, would it? Both mechanics opinions (and I and I guess most of you disagree) is that even if the bottom end is good right now, it is liable to not be good for much longer. The GM specialist showed me a valve seat that became loose from a 4.3. I can sort of see if mine is loose, and rotating, it could cause it to run good sometimes and bad others. My issues does seem periodic. When it was barely driveable last week, I told myself the pattern was that once it gets to barely driveable, it quickly will start driving well again, and that is what happened. It seems very periodic. Runs well, then slowly starts running worse until it's unbearable, then suddenly runs well again, and the cycle repeats. Granted, it never runs truly properly, since I have not been able to power up a hill without noticing power drop off since I had the new fuel pump put in 8 or so months ago.

I just was in there looking for worn wires, nothing really stood out. I put the engine cover and passenger seat back in, kind of a symbolic me giving up. I wish I could keep this van, but doesn't seem feasible. Were older years less difficult to diagnose?
