I keep looking at this picture and am puzzled. I been reading into the differences between component, s-video and hdmi lines. I read that hdmi also carries audio with the video signal. Is that true? If so, why would the face plate pictured above have component connectors?

Those are component RGB (Red Green Blue) video-only connectors and do not carry audio. The top connection being Toslink optical audio that does not carry video.

So you've got the right idea. You could use either:

1. HDMI for audio and video
or
2. RGB for video and Toslink for audio.

You wouldn't ever use all the connections, but it would be nice to have the option. I guess I just was giving one example of a cool wallplate, not specifically recommending that particular one.

that type of plate would be so you could use one plate for multiple applications. like the rgb and optical for a theater projector and then the hdmi in a separate room such as in the kitchen to look up recipes on the computer

You could put all of your equipment accross the room and then get one long ext wire for your mouse and one long ext wire for your keyboard , thats all you really need is your mouse and keyboard .
Another option , this ones more expensive but they have wireless mouse and wireless mini keyboard for $80 bucks and it has a range of 50 foot and works around corners.
I like extension wires myself because if mmy keyboard ever goes bad i can pick another up cheap.

I wish I could move the computer closer to the TV, that one is out of my hands *cough*wife*cough*. I already have a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'll have to run wire to make this happen unless I do the wireless setup. Which really isn't a bad idea.
I would then have to run a VGA wire, a printer cable, speaker cables, and usb from that area to the computer desk. Seems easier and cheaper to run a hdmi cable instead. But as already stated, the wife wants the computer to be in the computer desk.

This is a trial run of the hdmi setup. Sees to work great. The only "problem" I've noticed is that I can't run the sound card and hdmi output on the same application at the same time. On Win XP, I can only have one or the other set as the default at the same time. Not a terrible thing, just kind of annoying to have to switch back and forth.
