Greetings, I am new to the site as I just recently acquired an 1987 Astro CS... isnt my first van, but it is my first 4.3. I am currently building an 87 Suzuki Samurai project and really needed more room than a 93 Saturn Wagon could offer, so we traded it strait up for this van. It is in reasonable shape, but I keep getting code 24. When I read around on various websites I get conflicting answers. Is code 24 for VSS or IAT? When I read up on VSS it would seem that my van has all those symptoms, but I can not find where the heck it is! Someone please help me, Im getting very poor milage... Id like to be able to actually allow myself to drive this thing around.

Im gonna start another thread in the engine area...

Thanks,
JeF

Welcome from another newbie here!
I had an 87 S10, the VSS was on the back of the speedometer. I just looked on my old credit card style code reader, it says 24 is either VSS or the park/neutral switch.

Good luck!

not to burst your bubble , but there is no VSS on an 87 astro . its cable driven speedo not electronic so theres no need for a sensor . 89 is when they switched to an electronic speedo & in turn introduced the VSS which is in the tailshaft of the tranny .

Sorry skippy, there is. It was used for cruise control up till 87ish apparently. It is a little led light and optical pick up. It has control over a bunch of engine stuff like egr , iac, and the like. I have replaced it and my trouble codes have gone away. Thanks folks.
