Hi, Newbie in East Tn.
My son has been driving our 1995 RWD Astro automatic for a couple of months now. He pulled in our driveway yesterday and smoke was coming from the rear differential. He said that the transmission would not shift out of 2nd gear but continued to drive home. By the time he got here the rear diff was so hot it was smoking.
Any suggestions for CHEAP repair?.

If cheap fix not realistic then I would like to put it up for sale. It's a white on blue RWD Choo Choo custom with power windows, mirrors. Has TV/VCR console in floor. In dash CD. Interior lights. Rear seat folds to bed. 4 Captains Chairs. Very clean van. I can send pics via email if you are interested. Live near Knoxville TN.
Thanks for any help.

I would check the rear brakes first. They are probably locked on, and that's where the smoke is coming from.

The trans was probably not shifting due to the heavy load(locked brakes) put on it.

x2. Dumb question(you can lie to us just this once if you have to save face) but, is the parking brake on? A buddy of mine drove 10 miles like that once, complaining how his car wasn't running properly and had no pickup. It happens.

Welcome aboard!
