I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and it seems to be the best for me so far but I will try Fedora again.

What I like about Ubuntu is that I am starting to see more software "packages" that don't require a whole lot of command line work to get an application running. The only thing that I don't like about Libre Office is that if you import a file from one of the MS applications, all of the formatting is screwed up as soon as you save it and open it again. But I still use it for work because it lets me open all of those Office 2010 and 2013 files from people are too snooty to save it in the 97-2002 format.

The only thing that I have not conquered is the use of WINE. But the Ubuntu repository has just about everything that I need.. even DVD players and the Linux version of VLC.

I use Fedora 18 on my Dell XPS laptop, I dual boot with Windows 8. The reason I use Fedora is that it is the only Linux that will automatically install the wired & wireless drivers for this laptop, I don't have the time to go looking for drivers. I like the way Fedora is laid out, easy to use.

After messing with Fedora 18, wine etc, I finally got my PCLINUXOS loaded onto an old server that was no longer required. If playing Music and DVD's and a lot of TV video files etc is what you want, i highly recommend. This is even better than my default Xandros OS, which i must admit is dated and not supported anymore!

I have to admit that at present i haven't checked the full compatibility with MS Office 2013 documents through Libre.

So success with Fedora 17 and 18 and PCLINUXOS. If i can do it anyone can!

Also i don't know how good PCLINUXOS is with a modern laptop with wireless, but Fedora's really good on that count.

But as an entertainment system at present i'd go with PCLINUXOS. Just load and play.

Cheers,

Baz

Just finished getting my custom kernel built and working. Only took a few tries, that was a headache. As it turns out having the Radeon Framebuffer set up (not the X11 one) caused it not to want to work properly. Removed it from the config and all seems well now. The machine is a lot faster and the graphics are good.
