So I started tackling changing my spark plugs and wires on my 98 AWD Astro today. As annoying as having to pull a wheel off to get the ones on the passenger side was, at least it was physically possible and I didn't lose too much blood. I don't see a way to get my relatively large hands in to even pull the boots off the ones on the drivers side - let alone get a wrench with or without a universal joint on it in to remove the plugs. Any tips on how to accomplish this short of paying the dealer $450 for the job? (that's what they quoted me for it!) Haynes manual is useless (I should have known better). Any special tools that make this possible?

TIA,
MCA

I finished up the job today along with a new cap and rotor. The passenger side ones were done in about a half an hour yesterday. The drivers side ones probably took two hours or so (with breaks to do other things around the house so I didn't go nuts staring at these parts that were just out of reach). Went out and picked up a set of spark plug wire pliers from Sears - they ought to make these things four times as long for reaching into crazy places like this. If I have to do this again I'm going to recruit a smaller friend to do the tight work. I'm 6'3" and 225 with hands that fit that size body. They just don't want to sneak between the body, frame, and exhaust manifold. Also did the front brake pads and an oil change while I was on a roll. The van should be a lot happier now, but I see why the dealer can get $450 for the job (not that I would pay it if I can still lift a wrench). :multi:
