Hi all,
I've had this problem the whole time I've had the van, but have just been too busy to worry about it. Now, I've got the time to fix it, if it's possible. What's going on is that both power windows will only go down part way, then you have to wait until the motor cools(i think) for it to start going back up. Most of the time, you have to get the window up in several hitches. Are my motors dying, or do I just need to clean and regrease the mechanism in there?

Thanks!
John

Your motors are dying. They trip out on overheating, then when they cool you can move 'em again (a bit).

Might as well replace them before they stop moving at an inopportune time....like when it's raining and they're stuck down.

Try 1aautomotive.com for the motors. Good price, good shipping, good people.
I bought mine from them on eBay. Definitely good people.

So, I just got this '93, it's awd, sweet ride, off craigslist, great price. But it needs some tlc. What my current dilemma is the window motors, as in both, one dead, the other on it's way...A friend says screw the motors, get the regulator from a wrecker, because the motor alone is a pain to swap out. It looks like you guys swapped out the motors...any tips on this before I start? All help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
\PS I would rather swap out thew motors, if it's not too miserable a job...

Have a good die grinder/dremel on hand with the heavy duty cutoff wheels - at least 4 of them. The rivets that hold the regulator to the door are HARD. The ones holding the motor to the regulator are smaller and easier to drill.

New motors come with 4 bolts to hold them to the regulators. You'll need 4 regulator to door bolts & nuts. They need to be short enough not to interfere with the window.

Put a plastic bag over the top of the door, then put tape over the bag to hold both sides of the glass or it'll fall into the door & probably shatter.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

If you have the right tools on hand, swapping both motors will take you less than 1.5 hours, even less if you've ever done it to any other vehicle before. It's not difficult at all,and swapping regulators out with junkyard units with junkyard motors is seriously gambling with doing it again sooner than later anyway, aside from creating even MORE work.It only took me an hour a door on my 93 SL-2, and you had to take the doorskin off and do it from the OUTSIDE on that one.

Hey,
I replaced the pass side motor.
Things you might do and need.
Take a small punch and knock out the center pin in the 4 Aluminum rivets that hold the regulator. Then drill them out with a 1/4" bit. I used some duct tape to hold the glass up during the operation. I taped up one side, over the top of the door and down the other, about 2 ft of tape all together, in 2 places. I also did the same thing to the arm rest bracket, so as not to tear the crap outta the paper liner. You 8- 1/4" X 1/2" long bolts. I used SS( stainless steel), w/ nylok nuts to re-install. When installing the regulator, in stall the upper rear roller 1st, then the lower and the front upper last. Seemed to work best. The rest is easy, reverse the panel removal. I tapped the paper back on, the sticky shit still kinda worked, but a little help was needed.
I need switches for both sides, driver's and pass. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks and good luck, George

One more thought/question on the topic...anybody know which wires are the up group and which are the down...? In case I get the (no doubt) broken wires straightened out and the &^$%#$ FRICKIN' THING STILL DOESN'T CO-OPERATE!...All help appreciated... :D
Thanks, George
PS and thanks for the busted wire suggestion...My bud has been lobbying for f'd up connections, I have been resisting that solution...'til now!!! :banghead:

Technically, there is no up group and down group. Only two wires run from the switch to the motor. Forgive me, I don't remember the colors but when the window is going down, one wire will be positive and the other negative. When the window is going up, its vice versa. The switch controls which wire is positive and which one is negative.

yeah basically you need to splice new wires on and make sure you hook it up the same way. if it is reversed you will have up for down and down for up.
