My drivers power window rolls down with no problem but will only go up a short distance before stopping. Nothing happens for some period of time in either the up or down command. I can hear the relay click. There is power to the wire in both directions.

I'm wondering if there is a "thermal" shutoff reset in the motor, because after a period of time, the window will make some movement in either up or down motion.

I haven't tried letting the motor cool down for say an hour before retrying the window up deal.

Any ideas?

I probably will pickup a new motor before I really rip into correcting the problem and wait for better dryer weather.

It doesn't have a "thermal" shut-off, but power is controlled by a circuit breaker.
When it "pops", it takes some time to reset.
Try lubing the regulator and the tracks to see if that helps, otherwise you probably need a new motor.

To 2002 Safari - I just replaced my driver's side window motor on my '01 this past weekend. I was having the same trouble.
It's a job I probably wouldn't have attempted before I found this site.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed their experiences on replacing the motors. It made it so much easier for me and it was a snap doing it.

FWIW, I have a customer whose Volvo power window quit working. He took it to the local non-Volvo shop and heard a story he's heard MANY times: "That part has to come from Volvo!"
Total bill was $1000.
I remembered all the discussions about replacing Astro window motors and was
glad I'm driving a vehicle with parts easily/ affordably available.

I have the same problem with my 98 Astro. The window will go down a few inches then stop. 10 seconds later I try it again and it goes down a little further. Going back up is the same process. My motor was changed about a year ago. I am wondering if it has to do with the switches? Please help :banghead:

 Yes we have a 98 passenger window that has the same ailment for a while now. It always makes its way back home just slowly sometimes :chevy:

Having the same problem with a 2001 Astro I just bought. I did some research where I found many cases that pointed to the problem being caused by cables getting damaged inside the rubber boot that takes the electric cables from the door into the dashboard. Apparently it is very common?

The fact that the window has problems going UP most of the time seems to indicate a bad motor, but at this point I don't know what to think.
