Prospective buyer with question about AWD

I am looking for an AWD Astro as my next project car (my current one is an 1984 AMC Eagle, also AWD!).

My understanding is that Astro's before the 2000 model employed a viscous coupler that maintained a more-or-less constant power split between the two axles. Then, in 2000, they went to a more 'on-demand' type of system that used electronic actuators to engage the front axle when wheel slippage was detected. Is this correct (particularly the year that things changed)?

I don't like the 'on-demand' idea and want to make sure I get the constant AWD, which is what my Eagle uses. So I'm looking for a 1999 or earlier Astro/Safari. Can anyone verify my assumptions?

Thanks in advance from a newbie,
John Bendiksen

You are correct, I need to add a few things. Will try to work on those tomorrow.obviously running and drivable, inspection ready. As for this one, I almost choked when I saw the 86K until I saw the speedo pic with 86K. Mileage is good,Color is fair enough interior good, "barn doors(?),not the end of the world, but RWD only(?), and doesn't this year have the "illusive parts BW4472(?)" I tried their "Check out our superamericaautos.com/website link", but couldn't find it, though if it IS at a dealer that might be a good thing, and they had a 2000 cargo, "gack white", I didn't check it out much past that the barn doors, and the grey interior. The 10 grand is a little more than I hoped for. Plus the airfare rental/taxi/uber, motel, And I still have to drive it 3K miles to get home with it, plus those costs. How do I tag it to do that? But thanks for your efforts. What do you get out of all this research?I have found a few more local here within a 100 or 200 mile tow truck drive. Not as pretty but a couple of the funky green ones but no idea about the LSD, not with your find either, might be 1 or 2 And all of these are a$3K and under, some considerably under, but still requiring interesting, though cheaper, logistics. Thanks again Rod.

Fun story about mine:

My 2000 AWD van was purchased "sight unseen" on Ebay from Whitefish Montana (we live in South Florida). It was found online last day of listing, and only a couple hours later won the bid (low-mileage at a surprisingly low price)... and made arrangements with seller to have it parked at the local airport, waiting with key under the fender. It was already lifted with nice wheels and monster mudder tires.
Mdmudchcher asked "What do you get out of all this research? "
I would not call it 'research'. I just watch the A/S list and scan the local Craigs list regularly.
I am not looking for anything specific, but occasionally I find parts I can use.

That is quite noble if you. I am glad to hear that you do get rewarded fir your efforts/ help even if it isn’t a direct monetary kind. I am trying to negotiate on a1999, if I remember right. A little over 200 miles away. Still gotta compromise, an Ok, brown. Asking for the RPO sticker pic but don’t think people understand since I don’t have a pic of it on the door to show them. One guy responded that he had posted it, but it was the other one with the vin and tire sizes, etc. I am hoping that I can get someone to take a good one that we can show people what we want and I’ve already found Will’s list to decide them.
For the RPO sticker tell them it is on the passenger door.

I sent a picture of an RPO code sticker, for reference.

I know someone who has a 1999 passenger van with a 231 c conversion and rear limited slip. It has 150 k or so. Its not lifted or anything. Its in Spearfish South Dakota. He was talking about selling it for 10k
You can also look up by VIN. But get pictures of the RPO codes, and then post them over here:

I'd like more info on this, including contact info, pix, etc.
