I have a 2000 GMC safari and I am leaking ps fluid and I am noticing some whining. I want to replace the pump and the pressure hoses. I know the van has hydroboost, do I need to get a pump with or without the reservoir?

Hi Safari2000

You mean the one where you add fluid to (above the pump?). No that one doesn't need to be replaced if it's not leaking. You want to get the "Complete" pump assembly for the power steering pump though. They have both available (complete pump assembly) is what you want. Hope this helps.:)

Did you find the leak? One of the usual leaks is from the o-ring on the pressure line that connects to the pump. Its a really cheap fix. Another common leak is the top of the gear box where the input shaft attaches to the splines.

Could anyone recommend a link to some basic how to's for replacing the PS pump. I've got the new pump and hoses, but kind of nervous about getting the pulley off and on. I read somewhere that I have to get the pulley off before I can get to the mounting bolts. 2000awd. Thanks!

Hi Safari2000

It's a pretty straight forward job 2000, it just takes time and patients to do. You will need the power steering pump puller and installer. Here is a link to the 96 model which should be the same as yours except you should have a plug-in to remove from the back:

If you find this to be way off base from your year let me know, it should be the same. Please keep us updated, thanks.:)

hey safari 2000,
i just replaced the "o" rings and shaft seal in mine this weekend so here goes:
take the air cleaner assembly off , take the mass air sensor and the air inlet hose off.then take the fan shroud off ,should have 8 bolts, top and bottom.once u get the shruod off it really opens everything up.you can take the fan off for easier acess. I didnt take mine off just to save time. take the belt off .you'll have to have the power steering pulley puller/installer.take the power steering pulley off with the puller. now under the van i took the brace to the front off for easier access. You need to take the hoses off before you unbolt the pump from the bracket.you;ll need a pan to catch the fl.uid .i took the low pressure hose off first to drain the system. then the resavoir hose then the high presure hose(you'll need a 16mm line wrench for this).after the pump drains take the three bolts off the front i think they are 12mm or 13mm.then take the nut off the back its a 15mm nut its on a stud thats on the engine block.Dont take the two nuts on the back of the pump off 'they only hold the bracket on.installation is reversal of removal. the info matrixx sent you is a pretty good representation of what you need to do. Hope this helps.
