You have to take the radio apart. Then you can replace the bulbs.

Thing is, only some styles are replaceable, others are not. The only way to tell is to take it apart and check.

Hi.
I was just going to start a thread about the same issue. I seem to have lost some light inside my radio too.
If I tell you mine is in a '98 Astro with the AM/FM Cassette radio, with the seperate CD player lower down, then can anyone tell me if that style I can change the bulbs inside? (before I tear the console and radio to pieces for nothing).
Thanks.

I am haveing the same problem with my 2002 Safari. I also have some of the dash lites out on the rear AC, heater and wiper switches. I took it into my garage and the tec said that they were not replaceable unless the whole thing was dismantled and all were replaced. I took his word for it and didn't go there.

Those dash lights can be replaced and they are not terribly hard. But your garage is right, if you are going to replace a couple, you might as well replace them all.

Merry christmas!!!

I have the same problem on my Astro right now, but I haven't gotten around to fixing it. I did it on my old Grand Prix though (RIP).

You probably have to remove some of the dash panels to be able to pull out the radio. Then you'll have to take the radio apart a bit. At the least, you'll have to take the metal cover off the radio and maybe some of the buttons. The bulbs aren't going to be the kind you can find at your local auto parts dealer. You'll need to find them at an electronics supply store, and then solder them into the radio. I just took the burnt out ones with me into the store to find a match. They're very tiny. Not too hard really.

I also have a problem with the gear indicator in my guage cluster. You know the red box that lights up behind your gear. It acts very eratically. Sometimes there's no light at all, sometimes it flashes, and sometimes it lights up the wrong gear! Has anyone had this problem before?

Someone on here did have that problem with the gear indicator. I wish I could remember who or in what thread I read it in. They fixed it by replacing the gear selector unit.

I don't know. How do I find out?
I don't really think that you are having an issue with overcharging. Sure, it could happen, but dash lights go out on older vehicles. That just happens.

But if you want to see how much voltage the alternator is putting out, remove it and have it tested at any parts store. Or if you have a multimeter, connect the positive lead to the 'hot' post on the back of the alternator and just ground the negative lead. You can't attach the positive lead to the positive post on the battery because you will not get an accurate reading.

I disassembled the heater and AC switches and replaced the little bulbs in there with LED's...I won't hafta worry about those ever burning out again. The switches are actually not too hard to disassemble. The front face comes off, then the little plastic light pipe comes out. You will need a good pair of needlenose pliars, some flathead precision screwdrivers, and a gentle hand to do this job tho. When you re-assemble, just make sure you line the slider up within the switch to the round dial part on the outside.

Great idea. I never thought to replace with LEDs. Do you need a certain kind to diffuse the light properly?

Hi. I had made a comment on the first page about the radio lights. I'd like to say I finally took the time to pull mine to pieces. Got most of my radio lights working again.

I have a '98 Astro with the Delco AM/FM cassette with the remote CD player below. So found this handy site http://www.corvetteradios.com/corvetteradios_013.htm My radio is one of the GM UNO radios 1995-02, half way down the page, the one on the right with the one with the cassette player. Theres a link to Installation Instructions for new bukbs below the picture of my radio.

The bulbs required are 12V 50ma, you can get them here: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2104023 or get them from that Corvetteradios site, and plenty other sources online.

My store didn't have more than 4 bulbs in stock, and I already had the dash apart and the radio in pieces only to find theres approx 10 or 12! I only had about 7 burned out. I replaced the ones for the station button #s, and the volume level bulb was ok, the AM FM button also ok. I did a couple others since I had 4 bulbs.
I just generally wanted to be able to see the station buttons.

You have to solder the old ones out and new ones in. Not too difficult. Now when its pitch black and I want to change stations to find a better song at the moment, I can now see where to stick my fingers :D

I took my radio apart today to replace the bulbs. What a pain. The screws holding down the circuit board are a 1/8" hex. Good luck find a nut driver like that. One screw is in a hole making it really hard to get at. I used needlenose pliars which I ground to a narrow point.

The radio had 10 bulbs and an LED. All but 2 bulbs weren't working, and I think I burned out the LED trying to test it. 2 bulbs are on a white base, and 8 are black, and I think they have different ratings. There aren't any numbers on them. I think the black ones are 50 mA and the white ones are 100 mA, but I'm not certain.

Anyone know the part# for the radio w/CD player?
