I have a 2000 safari AWD . My van just dies when it starts raining. :banghead: If it is already raining it takes me 10-15min to start it. Then it will die 4-6 times before I get to work. All the wires, plug,s cap, rotor, look fine . What can it be? Does anyone else have this problem?

Look under the hood at night, in the dark. Remove the doghouse & look in there too. See if you see any sparks. If you do, there's your answer. I was on the side of I-95 one night, the engine was running, but it looked like an "eye of the storm" globe under the hood of that car with all the stray fire.

When it's damp out and won't start, do you have spark at all?

Welcome aboard!

Hi Len8827
The "usual" problem for this is faulty spark plug wires when it rains. They are more exposed to the elements and in turn are the first things to give problems like you described above. I had the very same problem you do now, and it was the coil wire shorting on the transmission filler tube. This needs to be checked at night (no lights) with a spray bottle of water and spray the wires down while the van is running and dog house off. Hope this helps. :)

PS: When was last tune-up done on your van?

Change your coil. faulty plug wires will cause it to run like crap...... but to compleatly kill it the majority would have to be screwed up.
If your coil has a micro-leasion (or hairline crack) it WILL pick up on the moisture in the air and arc. This would cut the spark for all your plugs, hence your van dies.

They are affordable and easy to swap

Hope this helps

None the less a coil is nothing to rule out, I had a very similar problem, turned out to be the coil, infact the van would stumble and die at idle in park.

Food for thought,

Chris
Chris-the history of these vans don't prove that as a large factor.Sorry guy, just the facts.
