Hi webcat
The first and foremost cause is the Pinion Bearing and what should be ruled out first, but not the only one. I had the same noise with basically the same scenario you described, and it was the Pinion for me fore sure. I replaced my rear end (housing and all) a couple years back because it had so many miles on it, I picked up a whole unit from a friend of mine who sold it to me cheap and I installed that instead.

Check and rule out the Pinion Bearing first, next would be Axle Bearings, then work into it from their. Hope this helps. Please keep us updated, Thanks. :)

Yeah, that kind of noise will be wear from the ring and pinion. Sometimes you can get away with just changing the rearend fluid (grease) and the sound can go away. This is a common problem (for lack of a better word) with GM 10 bolt rearends. When you change the fluid, check both sides of each tooth on both the pinion and ring gears. They need to be completely smooth, period. Each side of each tooth should have a smooth uniform look to it, if part of the side is shinier than the half, that would indicate an abnormal wear pattern. The easier it is to tell the difference, the worse the pattern is.

That is a pic of a newer 10 bolt but it will basically look the same.

alot of people around where i live tell me to go to the junk yard and get a complete rearend housing and all
but i always figurd one from the junk yard woud'nt have alot of life left on them either as it seems its common problem for them to fail
if i could find a rebuild kit to just replace all the guts , gears , bearings , differential + wheel bearings and all that would be the easiest way for me personally

but i hav'nt found anyone who sales rebuild kits if i could find parts i could fix it easy

i could live with the noise at first but its pretty loud now
i dont know if i have the limited slip or open style differential yet

thanks for the information

so now i'm going to look at my
pinion bearing
axle bearing
then go deeper
look at gears for wair
heres a picture of my 1988 G30 with rear end noise then my astro van is my daily driver

Do you know what rearend comes in that G30? If its a 10 bolt, everyone sells kits for them. Now what I would have to caution you on is that if you have never rebuilt a rear end before, I would have someone else do it who is experienced in rebuilding rear ends. There is an alignment procedure that has to be properly shimmed to create a correct gear pattern. Rebuilding the rear end close will not cut it here. It would be noisy and not last at all. I am not assuming that you don't know how to work on cars, I am just leaning on the side of caution.

I just found out i have the 14 bolt 9.5" in the G30 van

i found a link that sales parts for GM differentials and they sale a dial indicator for
proper setup of the ring and pinion back lash measurement
they also have detailed instructions on how to install.
i've never done a rearend before but i have plenty of time on my hands and
i'll take my sweet time and make sure i have all the information i need to
do it right before actually starting the project
http://www.drivetrain.com/GMtrkratio_posidata.html

i dont know it all right now but
i'll be continuing research on information regarding building the rearend
and if you have any more information that you feel that would be helpful to me
i would be grateful

thanks for all the info

i dont know whos owns this chevelle but i like it.

Yes, that is a sweet chevelle. Knowledge is only half of it, you have to develop a 'feel' for rearends. The best advise I could give you is to study everything you can find and then go buy a crappy junkyard rearend. Remove and rebuild that rearend over and over. Play with the different shims and see how the gear pattern changes.

I really wish GM made better rearends. That's why I'm putting a 9 inch in my van.

i dont know about the astro van rear ends but actually the G30 rear end held up for quite along time considering that i use to kick the *** end around corners on a daily basis ripp'in the tires for years , and even though i tried to lighten the van ( basicly stripped it down , no emmision controls no ac no bumpers pretty much just engine block and headers its still weighs about 4600# taking corners with a 4600# van put alot of punishment on it but in the end the rearend was definetly the weakest link and my ball joints would come in second they feel
pretty loose , i'm lucky they did'nt bust . that would've been a major crash and burn !

after doing some major research i'll take your advice and practice getting the feel of it.
i'll just practice on the one i got though
