I'm struggling a bit with the rear speaker configuration for an audio build. What makes more sense and/or would sound better?

A 2-way component set, putting the 6 1/2's in the dutch doors, and tweeters in the pillars, or 4" 2-way coaxial in the rear pillars, and remove the dutch door speakers?

It seems the dutch door speaker location is not ideal for mid range given the seat backs are blocking them. The pillars being more at ear level are ideal. However, the 2-way coaxial are very small. Interestingly, the component sets I'm considering cost less than the 4" 2-way coaxials of the same product lines.

I will be running either Focal Access, or Morel Maximo Ultra, with a down firing sub under one of the benches; or possibly a custom box at the side of the rear cargo somewhere.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

A more common arrangement would be 6.25"-6.5" subs in the doors and 4x6 2 ways in the pillars. The key factor is to properly amp the subs. You can add tweeters to the front doors or A pillars to help round it out.

A van is a very large space to try to make sound good, especially for musicality with some volume. Putting midbass or subs in the back doors can certainly sound better than the factory speakers, Once you try for some performance audio you will discover real fast that the factory rear locations just dont cut it. Good Luck, Have Fun. :)

Thanks for the advice.

After spending some time in the van, it seems an additional component channel for the mid row would be ideal.

Ended up grabbing front and rear channels of Focal 165a1 6.5" components, and a 10" down firing Kicker with a passive radiator to mount under one of the benches. Most likely the mid row (for practicality), but I'll test for the best location.
