So since the old alarm that is in the van isnt operational I'm going to install a new viper alarm with remote start. My question is does anyone know if I need a bypass module start the van on my 2000 astro? It does have the security light I think that might have the sensor in the ignition cylinder? I cant find a straight answer.

Your van has GM Passlock, which keeps it from starting if it does not recognize the resistor in the key.You have 2 choices, get the proper module from Viper,or bypass the system,is simple, measure the key then solder in a resistor in the right wires. However this defeats the Passlock system completely, which,in my opinion,is not a big deal,as you are adding a alarm system. You can find info on bypassing Passlock with a simple internet search. When I installed systems, most people opted to bypass the system, then they did not have to purchase "chip" keys when they needed new keys.

Thanks, I'll probably go the resistor route. But I am confused a little, my key doesn't have the resistor in the key like I've seen while googling and it doesn't have pk3 on the key either so its probably not the chip style?. Any suggestions? Thanks

You're right there's no chip in the key. There's a sensor below the ignition cylinder that uses a hall effect to determine if a key is there rotating the cylinder. If there's no rotation when the VCM is getting the signal to start the engine it will not let engine run.
