How difficult is it to turn a RWD Astro to AWD or 4x4?

I've noticed a lot of the reasonably priced AWD vehicles in my area are 1) overpriced 2) plagued with problems 3) neglected / failed projects 4) still in high demand despite this.

I think it would be ideal to source a very clean RWD van then convert it to AWD or 4x4 if that's a reasonable DIY task.

Possible?

Any threads outlining the process?

100% possible by changing out the subframe. It has been done quite a few times, don't know how much documentation is out there though. It's just swapping the subframes and associated driveline parts, esp if you are going with a full time or manual case.

If you want a 4x4.. you'll need an AWD.
If you want an AWD.. you're going to need to find one.

Converting a RWD will still require an AWD

Save yourself a lot of time, money, and headaches and get a Tahoe or something.

I took an 89 Astro and put the front frame with brakes, steering, suspension and front axle from a 98 AWD under it with a V8 and next spring I hope to swap the AWD transfer case for a 4x4 transfer case from an S-10. But I have to much time on my hands being retired and I ran into a few problems. Feel free to ask me questions if you wish. Mark

Yes, that has been done as well.

I would imagine when doing an SAS, starting with as blank of a canvas as possible (I.E. the RWD subframe) would be the way to go? I know that has been the case with other crawler builds I've witnessed.

Definitely, but with an SAS you are going to have to do some fabrication.
