today my serpentine belt started to come apart. i lost all power for steering and brakes. i put a new belt on but i still have no steering and brakes. i noticed the belt is walking off the crank pulley. what would cause it to walk off the pulley?

Alignment would be the first thing. Second a broken part such as the tensioner. Or a bad bearing in one of the moving parts, causing the belt to be out of line. The slightest (off angle) will cause it to walk out.
Does your guide wheel at the top spin freely? The bolt that secures it is like 4" long and and can bend causing the belt to walk off. While you are in there check that your tensioner is moving freely. I doubt there is an issue with your other pulleys.
Well it ended up being the power steering pump. I was able to pull the pulley and shaft right out of the pump. I’ve never seen that happen before. I’ll be replacing the pump tomorrow. I’m guessing it knocked the alignment out causing the belt to roll off.
Unfortunately a snapped power steering pump shaft is all too common. Glad you found your problem, just remember that most LAPS have a loaner tool program for the puller/installer.
It’s all fixed now. I waited all day for the new pump to arrive at the auto part store.
