I had the water pump off the daily driver already when I found out about the "special tool" required to remove the fan clutch from the water pump.

Go to the store to buy a spendy one-time use tool? Heck no, just whip out the Millermatic and presto, the shaft doesn't turn anymore.

I bought a new, not reman, pump so there is no core return.

:D :D :D

just so everyone knows ive done it a few time my dad is a gm tech its the only way he does it but if you have a air hammer hit it on the edge of the hex and it will loosen it so you can take the fan off.

The air hammer sounds like a good idea.

I tried the strap wrench, but couldn't get it loose. I didn't want to get too carried away and break the fan.

Then I had the "idea". I really had nothing to lose at that point.

????? Wow, That's extreme. If any of you have fabricating skills, then might I suggest you fabricate one from 1/4 or 3/8 inch steel plate? Make a "Horse Shoe" shaped piece that is slightly bigger than the clutch fan retaining plate and drill a whole slightly bigger than the size of the clutch fan retaining nuts and 180 degrees opposite each other, then weld a 1 1/2 or 2 foot bar at the base of it to having something to hold onto. That's the type of tool I use at the shop (When I work their) when the Nuts are hard to take off. Hope this helps.
