Looking for a steering shaft that has u joints on both ends. Can the u joints be replaced? If not need the entire shaft. 86 Chevy Astgo w/V6. Looking for the part for a friend living down in Panam.

Is the one pictured pulled from the vehicle in question or is it a random internet picture?
Based on the visible welds on those u joints I would say they are not easily serviceable though you could grind the welds off, press out the u joints and press new ones in then re-weld the caps in place. There may or may not be retaining rings under those but I cannot tell from the photo.
My model year has Dorman 425-142 on RockAuto but they show nothing for 86. I'm not sure how different the Gen 1 and Gen 2 steering shafts are but the Dorman does say 375mm length or 14.76 inches which is longer than your photo shows. It does look like they would attach similarly.
Might be why it went bad in the first place if it's not a good fit and left play where the u joints should be secured. Wouldn't it normally be retaining rings?
89 Chevyman, if you do go the rebuild route you'll have to measure the u joints and compare to options for sale. If you do get measurements for that, please share.
