Hey guys question about the infamous sun shell. Me and a buddy picked up an 01 Awd with 300k for 300$. Its has no reverse and 2, and by lurking in this forum I would assume its the sun shell. My question is once you remove the tranny how do you get the sun shell out and were is it? I know we should do a complete rebuild but we are just backyard guys and if the sun shell is gone thats all we are going to replace :D Also If we decide to just throw a used one in what year tranny is compatible with the 01?

Thanks for your help, Aaron

Ok, so its an internal part I kind of figured. Most likely it would be a tranny swap than because we like to do everything in house. What years and models would share the same goods? I seen that 98/99 years have a diffrent torque converter so what are the years I should be looking for?

I seen your pic from your other post Gary, thanks. I would like to know what year of tranny would be a candidate for a swap(plug and play) or if it could be a DIY to replace the shell?

Thanks

You could do it yourself, but you'll be cursing when it comes to fitting the clutches in again!

Phoned local scrapys and two of them said that it is year specific???? Like an 01 will only work with an 01, like come on man :naughty: thats stupid :!: Its not my van and i am use to dealing with weird engineering in my range rover and BMW, but come on at least i have options. But they both use ZF auto boxes no nonsense trannys tried and tested, unchanged through the years AT lease five year windows :snooty: Whats so diffrent with the diffrent years?

It's because GM was constantly upgrading weak links in them. some are interchangeable, some aren't.Best bet is to bite the bullet and let someone who knows what they're doing rebuild it.I paid 600 to have mine done on my '99,including Corvette servo. That was doing the r&r myself. Toss in fluid, new converter, beer and bandaids (and 40 bux for the new NSS that I destroyed before I learned that GM hotglued the connector on)and a few bux on a can of flush for the tranny cooler, and you're around a grand, give or take. OR, if it's not dependent on being used as soon as you finish, buy the ATSG manual, and the dvd on rebuilding them, and do it yourself.Once a transmission is dead, honestly, trying to go cheapo is just buying yourself a headache.Be forewarned, there are several sealing rings that have to be put on with special tools, but if you're crafty, it can be done without the insanely expensive tools that pro's use.You still need the rear clutch spring compressor, and bushing drivers to do it right though.I did my Suburban's 700R4 successfully, but it was a challenge without all the right tools. My G-body's 2004R is next, unless I stumble on some money, then I'll just pay someone, lol

^ good points, thanks. If it was mine I would just get it rebuilt by a pro. My friend likes to just pick up scrapers for like 200 dollars so a 1000 rebuild fee is a little stiff. I like the van and I wouldn't think twice about spending the money for a work van but I think it just going to end up as a parts rig for my Buddy's 98. We can get a used tranny for 600 from a scrap yard but considering he spent like 250 on the van I don't think its a good option. For 250 its hard to go wrong, its has good rubber and a good tailgate and it could be scraped for a 100 or 2  We are just backyard mechanics and tend to get a little medieval on stuff so I don't think we are doing any tranny rebuilds in the near future, replacements maybe

Trust me, I can relate, lol. I ran into the same thing, I couldn't believe they wanted 400 to 500 dollars at the scrapyards for one, I kept calling around until I found a place that didn't rape you for a rebuild. Some places wanted over a thousand to do it, with me doing the removal and install. They're ALMOST as bad as muffler shops.

Some of them are "year specific" internally, but if you get the tranny and converter together, anything from '97 up should work. I've heard that the speed sensor connector on some of the later ones is different, but I haven't confirmed that. All the ones I've seen are the same.

That is not true. It has to do with the computer and how it controls the transmission. Luckily though, GM used the same trans in Blazers and some other vehicles so that will widen your search.

Hey Gary, it's going alright. Need to hurry up and get Green fixed, but I have eight Liberties coming over for a lift party on Saturday. We're installing two suspension lift kits, some lift spacers, a CB, some under body amour, an O2 sensor, remounting some tires black wall out w/ bead balancing, and a coolant flush on my wife's Jeep. I'm hoping to sneak pulling Green's trans and Grumpy's front diff in there too.
