i have a 88 astro LT... its brown and has that factory brownish tint? I was wondering if you could put black tint over that.
I don't know if you should but I did. Only problem is that the brown factory tint changes the color of the black.

yeah tint on tint is never a good idea. your best bet is to scrape all the old stuff off and start over. i have seen way too many tint on tint jobs and they eventually bubble or start to peel off because they are made to stick to glass not plastic. i would save myself the hassle and remove the old stuff first.

In my exrpeience, it is some kind of coating, but not a plastic film like the after market stuff. It's applied to the glass, not in it. I'm talking the dark tint like used in a lot of the SUV back window, not the typical lite greenish tint/ UV shade that I believe all car's have.

oh my bad i thought we were talking about aftermarket tint. the only option you have then is to tint over your tint. or break out your windows and file a police report that says you saw some teenagers throwing rocks.

I did and it looks good. It would be applied to the inside of the window. But just like 355 said the exsisting factory brown which is made into the glass will alter the color. In my opinion it will still look better than not having it. I think the factory tint is not dark enough to keep prying eyes out. I went with an additional 35% tint all the way around. It lets me see out ok, and keeps nosey out. Jim

well the problem is that my front windows are not tinted at all so now i worried about them not matching. The plan was to paint my van glossy black and tint the windows to match. Privacy is nice but for me this is more aesthetic. So now im wondering if i tint the inside black will it still appear brown on the outside.

not sure but black plus brown is still black with no light coming through. it may look different color looking to the outside but looking at the van from the outside it should look black. as the front windows are concerned look into local laws about tint darkness allowed. my friends have limo all the way around and its against the law here to be that dark on the front. he has to roll the windows down so the cops cant see it or if they are hard up to write a ticket they will give him one for being too dark. its a safety thing for them that they may walk into a trap if they cant see what you are doing inside the car and they are standing at your window so its usually taken pretty serious

You could find non tinted factory windows to start from scratch. I like that the factory tint holds up over time better then the plastic tint.

i think thats the best idea. I think ill just leave it. after its painted if it doesnt look good then ill just get some non tinted windows from a junkyard and tint those and store my old windows. what a relief. that was helpful. so simple but i probally never would have thought of that.

I think non-tinted window Vans are pretty rare......probably going to be worth something in the future.

They make a bronze colored tint. Maybe you could do that on the untinted windows, then do the dark gray over them all.

Just a thought
