Hello fellow Astro fans. I have 170 k on my van and wondering what signs are for auto transmission going bad. I’ve owned 3 which all shifted a little different, harder, softer but never had any problems. Just wondering. Thanks

Well, my first 2 Astros shifted more solid to the next gear. More of a hit. The one now seems to glide smoother and longer to the next gear. Kind of like it feels when a clutch on a manual is starting to slip. That’s the only way to explain it. Still hauls 2 people and 2 dirt bikes on a trailer up in the mountains in Colorado just fine but it’s still in the back of my head.

How long since you changed the filter?
How does the fluid look?
Bright red, or dark?
Dropping the pan (while changing filter) will usually lets you know if there is a problem.

Soft shifts don't necessarily mean trans is going bad.. unless something is "slipping".
Fresh fluid and filter is always first line of defense (and diagnosis).. and usually helps.

Sluggish shifts (in older transmissions) can also be remedied by a "Corvette Servo", which raises pressure to shifts. I have this in both my van transmissions for firmer shifts. This servo upgrade is replicable thru side of trans, without any further disassembly.

"Trans-Tune" by Seafoam is a great additive (before filter change).. I've also had GREAT success with this product.
