Hello,

Yesterday the van won't start - just keeps turning over and over. I found that the dis cap and rotor must have had water due to the very bad burning I notice into the dis cap. I replaced the dis cap and rotor with one from NAPA and not AC delco and it still keeps turning and turning without anything. I do get a good spark on the center pin.

Any ideas.

Thanks

Before you go and change anymore parts, you need to verify what the problem is. Do you hear the fuel pump whine when you turn on the ignition?

NO, I don't hear anything from the gas tank.

I remove the fuel line going into the engine and no gas comes out. Then I remove the fuel pump relay and put a jumper from one side of the coil 12VDC to the end of the contact. Since don't hear the pump or see any gas coming out.

Is their something which will shutdown the fuel pump? or do I have a bad fuel pump. Before I drop the tank how do I verify 100% it's my fuel tank.

Thanks for any insight

If you jumped the connector for the fuel pump relay and verified that your ground under the van is ground, then its your fuel pump.

Hello,

Well here it is.

I can get the van started with a shot of starter. Next I have the relay clicking and do have 12VDC on the gray wire near the gas tank - attached diagram. But I can't find the location of the ground wire, as I would like to put 12VDC and ground to the fuel pump to make sure 100% it's this. I do see a ground wire bolted to the frame but doesn't look like it goes to the fuel pump.

Thanks for anymore help before I drop $500 on a fuel pump.

Also is it hard to remove the gas lines? Do you need a special tool.

Thanks

Ground wire is bolted to the frame behind the tank - right next to the electrical connector, depending on your year.

Flare nut wrenches for certain years, careful with clips for others. What year/motor are we talking about?

I do see a black wire with a flare nut - but the wire goes into a harness which comes from the main harness, and not to the connector going to the pump.

I just find it really odd, that my main problem was with the dis cap and rotor getting burned up due to mositure and now the a pump issue.

if you are on an incline and have very low fuel then the pickup is probably not getting anything. but since you were having trouble with your dizzy cap and rotor the fuel pump may have been primed with no fuel a few times causing air to get in the lines and maybe burning out the pump .. you need gasoline to lube the pump.

Well,

I have ground to the black wire of the plug with 12VDC. Just in case I put couple of gal. of gas in. Still no go. So it looks like I'm dropping the tank tonight.

One thing which I'm going to do, is measure the resistance of all the wires - comparing the old and new pump. This way we will have some idea of the resistance for the motor and sender unit.

Please tell me you won't spend $500, when you can spend $188.10 plus shipping on the ACDelco MU203 /Delphi FG0127 unit.

Saw this place on a couple of fourms and can't believe the price - The only problem is that I'm Canadian. By time I convert the cost, pay for shipping, duty at the boarder that price is close to $500.00.

Thanks for the tip

I don't believe your main problem was the cap and rotor. Carbon buildup in distributor caps just happen, they are not the result of some malfunction.

Not sure on how the fuel system is to work - but I figured if you have 12VDC on the gray wire going to the fuel pump for 2-3 seconds the you don't have anything them it must be the pump.

Well - I pulled out the pump last night and connected it to the battery - it ran !!!!. I hoping it's just the fact with all the movement the motor worked free and started. Buying the new pump today and we'll see how things go.

when you hit the key the fue pump primes for 2-3 seconds then it doesnt turn completely on until the engine fires and it sees the engine is cranking.

A fuel pump can still run and not generate enough fuel pressure.
Did you check the connections while the pump was still in the van?

One last question - would low fuel cause the fuel pump not to work? We parked the van on an incline and I know we didn't have much gas in the tank.

Thanks again
I had the identical problem....I'm in the process of changing the fuel pump right now. Whenever I parked on an incline the van wouldn't start. I drove it like that for a week or so. Went to the forum and found this thread. http://astrosafari.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4268&p=29049&hilit=fuel+tank#p29049 Believe me when I tell you I'm a complete novice at working on vehicles, but I can follow directions. I would like to say thank you h2omelon for postinf this. I was very nervous about dropping the tank and doing this myself, after I did it it wasn't bad at all. I initally bought just the pump and the strainer. Once I pulled the tank off, I decided to buy the whole assembly.

Thanks again H2OMelon.
