I have the FSM and it shows the lift points for a jack. Once I get it jacked up, where is the best place to put the jack stands? I see the control arms are suggested lift point. However, I'm doing the brakes today but next week I will be doing ball joints and control arm bushings so the control arm won't work. I tried the humps just behind the front tire but the front started going down and the tires started touching the ground so I got nervous. I have not lifted the front of the van yet. The first time makes me nervous on every car I've owned.

I don't ever remember having a problem jacking up an Astro. A lift is not the only way to skin a cat or change leaf springs even. Just because you have access to a lift doesn't mean that you have to use it for this job or even that it's the best tool for this job.
If it's YOUR lift, they make extensions for the lift pads, they are often stackable.
The only job that I think a 2post lift is really the absolute best tool for the job is a subframe swap. Other than that it's usually just as easy for someone to use a jack and some stands. Sure it can make other things easier/faster, but it's a luxury not a necessity. In your particular case it seems like it's a hindrance.
