Hi There.

It seems like a lot of the older astros that I've had, have a problem where the speedo needle bounces up and down a bunch when you drive at constant speed, or sometimes it just drops right to zero. I always get a code 24 when that happens.
Anybody before me figure out what causes this? its the old dash boards with the hockey stick shaped speedometer.
I wondered if perhaps the cable could be sticky and cause the plastic gear at the tranny to get worn out? or is the VSS maybe Dying.

Have you taken the cable out & cleaned/lubed it? The VSS in my old S10 (with the hockey sticks) had the VSS on the back of the speedometer. If the cable was erratic or stopped, I'm sure this would throw some kind of VSS code.

P.S.- you know about this link, right? Free streaming Grateful Dead-

Thanks for the reply.
I havent pulled one out yet, but I will pull the one from a dead van I have with no tranny in it.
That van had the same problem, so I will try to use it to figure this out, when the rain stops.
Feels like Noah will be showing up here any day with his Ark! Lol.
I saw my town on the national news, announcing a state of emergency due to the flooding.

PS Thanks for the link ! I hadnt seen it yet.

My dad had an early 80's Chevy pickup that did that. The plastic molding that the cable inserted into on the back of the instrument cluster stripped (rounded out) and the cable would do a "catch and release". Got another instrument cluster and it was solved.

Lets see.
62 Tempest, speedo slammed back and forth between 0 and past 120. Cleaned off the goobers, greased.
65 Belvedere', bounced, the nut on the back of the speedo worked loose.
68 Impala, Speedo went past 120, then to 0 and sat there. End of cable twisted all the hell. New cable.
80 Buick Century S/W, vibrated, cleaned goobers and greased.
98 Wrangler, just stops working. Firm smack on top of the instrument cluster and it's up and running along with the tach. and all other gauges.
Need to rip out the instrument cluster and tweak connection plugs.

We won't let you flounder, well unless maybe a little lemon juice and home made tarter.
