What is causing my wipers to move when I put on the blinker? Not everytime, but very often. They also move by themselves when the Van is off and no one is by it. I was working on the Van yesterday and they moved 2 times by themselves. Ignition off. Something in the actual column or under the dash?
Hopefully they don't start doing it too much I could go out to a dead battery one morning.

Thanks, Nick.

The multifunction switch. You'll have to replace it to make 'em stop....it's a common issue.

If its cheap enough I think I'm going to switch it. Its driving me nuts. Seems like it getting worse. Now they are going when I'm cruising at 70mph and don't touch nothing. They go one cycle then stop.

Mr. Bowtie,
Did you resolve your wiper problem. My 1990 Safari has been doing something very similar. Usually when I touch the turn signal lever, the wipers run one cycle, not every time, but maybe 20% of the time. If I drive over a bumpy section of road, the wipers may run one cycle.

So far, using parts from 1A Auto I have replaced the Turn signal lever and the mechanism inside the steering column behind the steering wheel. I was chatting with one of the techs at 1A Auto and he said it was most likely the Wiper Motor Pulse Board Module, which is mounted to the front of the wiper motor. This little circuit board is $152 at the local GMC Dealer. I have not yet ventured out to explore junk yards, because any part I would find would be just as old as what I currently have. The Pulse Board in my van is the retangular style and I can not find an aftermarket replacement.

I would definately replace the column switch, its probably a crossed connection the the contact board inside the switch, happened to my indicator switch, it would continue clicking fast just driving down the road, had to pull the steering wheel to get the dang thing out though

so the common fix seems to be replace the column switch. would this also be the culprit of my issue. it doesnt turn on auto, yet. but when you do hit the switch it pics random places to stop. like up top some times. or in the middle of the view. then you have to hit the mist switch to have it cycle a few times again and pick random as well. after a few tries it will stop low or if you are at a light i can hit the switch and kill the engine when it bottoms out, start the engine again and good to go till i need to wipe the window again and then the cycle repeats. any ideas :feedback:

I have not resolved it and probably never will. Just going to deal with it and put my money towards other things the Van needs to be reliable for me. Besides its a daily driver and did I mention RUSTY!

$uper Joe, have you checked the board under the hood for cold/bad solder joints? The 96 I drove for work had that happen, I resoldered the board and all was good.

Must be a common problem with these vans my does the samething and superjoe sounds like the circuit board. my 88 silverado did the samething with just stopping at random but it was so bad that sometimes it'd be raining and they just stop and buddy of mine had a 96 tahoe totaled in his back yard got the wiper motor never had a problem since

OK......new problem I think is related to the wipers being possessed?
After sitting for about a day and half my battery goes dead.........I wanna blame my wiper condition, but I'm not completly sure. So, what exactly do I need? Just the wiper/cruise control/blinker stalk for the steering wheel or the curcuit board on the wiper motor? Anyway to determine which one I need? I'm thinking the curcuit board because they move even when the wiper controls aren't touched and the ignition is off.

My battery which is 5 months old was drained down completly by the kids leaving interior lights on twice.........should probably have my battery check too just to be sure...

I have pulled my wiper fuse out for now to see if that stops the battery draining.

This is what I get for being lazy/cheap! :whack:

you could put the fuse back in and then remove the neg battery cable. wait a min and hook it back up. before you unplug it make sure the key is not on or any lights. if when you hook it up there is a small sparks then there is a current draw of substantial size. unhook it again and then unplug the wiper motor plug. if there is no sparks then usually that is the current draw device. if thats not it then there is another thing. sometimes the stereo will draw so its better to take the fuse for that out. if in the begining there is no spark then its small and you will need a multi-meter to diagnose this.

Good info thanks! I will give that a try. Electrical crap is not my thing! :banghead:

EDIT ** No big draw when I hook the battery back up. With or without the wiper motor hooked up. Looks like I may have to buy a multimeter and figure out how to use it too!

Every male human being should own a digital multi-meter, lol, as well as a sawzall. Anyhoo, the grim reaper got yer battery, and you need a priest for the possessed wipers! :laughing-rofl:
