2000 rear end?

2000 rear end?

Postby Coaster [OP] » July 22nd 2017, 7:36pm

my 1995 rear axle housing bent. very likely caused by running 90 pounds of air in air bags all the time. also coil over shocks.

it wasnt bent when i swapped tires. i can see it bent now.

i found a 2000 rear end with steel leaves for $200 80 miles away. i go get it tomorrow. i wont be running the air bags on it, at least not inboard the frame like it is now. bad idea.

2000 still had drums on the rear yes? any weird things i need to know :dunce:

Nothing weird. Should be the same.

Rear disc and 6-lugs came in '03, so you're fine.

cool. i hope the u joint is the same size. i'm not sure about the e brake cable either, but thats just details.

my plan is to add enough leafs to have a tough pack, similar to the 90 pounds of air, then get rid of the clamshells and go ubolts and top plate like others have done.

a little hard to tell but the tops of the tires are TWO INCHES closer to each other than the bottom

i emptied most of the trailer out to go get the axle. my wife convinced me not to take the van
i wish my van pulled the trailer as well as this truck. it does not. not even close. that trailer bosses my van around like crazy

i got it. it appears to be straight. i cannot find the codes on the axle but it appears to be an open diff 3.42. brakes are garbage, pinion seal shot etc etc. no biggie.

fit in my trailer pretty snazzy
P82A25421.jpg

looks straight

P82A25441.jpg

also picked up this mess too. its in bad shape. no one loved this van at all. it may not be worth saving the partition. maybe. i want one

I pulled a 24' dual axle like yours and had no problems with a 1999 AWD Astro all over Florida and half of Georgia. It looks like you have every thing up front this gives you a larger portion of the weight up front. If you lessen the additional weight to the front portion by moving stuff around it won't wiggle.
Good find that diff is in good shape. I need to have mine rebuilt bearings brakes and seals. I do not have a means to properly torque the pinion nut. I'l have it done at a shop that does them every day. My 2000 is still in the making. I guess I'll always be into fixing modifying mine till the grim comes to visit me.

trailer is usually loaded stem to stern. i took out the front of house stuff (double 18" subs, tops, amp racks, mixer, etc) to fit the rear in.

i wish i had time. we just had a baby, he is less than 2 weeks old and is now 6 pounds. he was born tiny and it didnt go great. he takes all my time after a 10 hour workday. i'm getting nothing done but i do love him so its worth it.

i need a van

i have an event this weekend, trailer is already reloaded and ready to go. i just wish a didnt work all day everyday

all this equip lives in the trailer. not the stage

How about an adjustable sway bar control add-on for the hitch? I've never used one, but some people swear by them.

Thanks for the reply.
The Firestones go just inboard of the leafs.
The Air lifts go to the spring but the frame bracket goes towards the tire.
1 review of them says it just clears the tire by a 1/2"!
Do you have any pics of yours?
Thanks!

Congrats with your son As time goes on the love will grow. I'm old now and wish many times over that I had not worked ALL the time. I always thought I had to work as much overtime as possible which was every holiday. family now is worth much more than the OT I chose rather than time with family and my son. Can't turn back time

i havent got very far. i had to use air hammer, impact, blue wrench, pb blaster, 6 foot cheater pipe on a breaker bar and i still mushroomed a couple nuts.

i had my rear down this far and used hand tools. stupid minnesota salt. we dont do that. oddly enough the clams are fine, mine were garbage??

i kinda want to pull the axles and check the bearings/replace seals.

i want to check the diff. it feels ok, but i can feel the gears cog when i turn the axles one direction, but not the other. weird. no idea

leafs spriings need help. spent most of the day with the boy. he finally went to sleep and i went to work

Yeah congrats on the little one, I am now a Grampa and I love all the grand kids! Good find on the rear axle and such. Mine is an 89 and I will eventually go with steel springs but luckily I am in California now instead of Maine so its pretty easy to grab springs-no salt used here.

On your trailer. It will be heavy on the tongue weight with the back set axle. Make sure your hitch pulls the trailer level. Any upward or downward slope of the tongue will cause the trailer to wobble. Load heavy over to slightly in front of the axle.

The van should pull that trailer with little effort.
If the van squats with the trailer hooked up. Use heavier load springs. Not band aids like air bags.
A rear sway bar will increase stability significantly.

still havent found any markings on the axle housing. i took the diff cover off - which has never been off. all the bolt heads were rotten so it took a while. inside its clean no metal, brown clean gear oil. i appear to have 3.73 ratio

i have new pinion seal, new axle seals, new diff cover gasket.

some parts have soaked in vinegar for TWO WEEKS before the rust started to get soft. those parts are now painted with rust converter.

i got the brake line off, which appears ok but rusty. may replace. clean fluid inside.

got the fill hole plug out. wasnt easy. blue wrench pretty much took apart everything

i was planning to pull out axles and swap backing plates (because i have new brakes in the 95, and less rust) but i read they change 97 down and 98 up. no idea there. look like they do bolt on the axle though

bought new leaf spacers.

I made a similar swap and the park brake cables are different on mine. I managed to get two cable clamps to solve the problem.

yeah the e brake cables do look different dont they.

in any case the 95 e brake cables are in great shape, 2000 not so much. i may wait until the axle is mounted under the 95 before swapping backing plates, axle seals etc.

not sure yet.
