Rear End Noise

I have a 1997 Astro AWD w/ 248k on the odometer.
I have a continuous noise from the rear end. Sounds like a bearing, but not quite.
Does an open bay Astro make a lot of noise in the rear?

Yes on 2 counts. The rear end the vans use is loud. And the van amplifies it by being a cavern in back, I rebuilt the rear end twice. New or old they do it.

A smooth high-pitch gear whine sound is probably normal.. even more so when empty.
A rough growling sound is bad.. big difference.
If it's an axle bearing, it will not make noise for long.
Look for pinion or axle leaks for clues.

Rear-End Forum
Rear-EndA differential is a device employing gears capable of transmitting torque and rotation through shafts. Essentially the differential allows each of the driving wheels to rotate at different speeds in the rear axle.
