Pinion shaft seal Replacement

I replaced the Pinion shaft seal and counted the turns on the nut . It came off I think a little sooner than the 10 turns. I went 10 turn back I think I might be off a half a turn. Will that hurt anything . How do I know If I'm off . I have not drove it yet . The nut seem about as tight as when i Took it off. Is there another way to set the bearing pre-load? It does not seem to tight when I turn it . It feels ok . Any advice? Luckybodog

No binding when you turn the pinion/U Joint dealy. No side play. No whining when you drive it. Your set. As good as you can do.

I read on the forum about the pinion seal replacement that it didn't help the problem. The one thing that got me thinking maybe their right is that when I had that pinion off to change the seal there was plenty of whobble but is there suppose to be? Luckybodog.

No there isn't supposed to be wobble. If that was why you replaced the seal it won't help. Does it growl when your giving it gas? Mine did that from about the mileage you have till I rebuilt it at 230 thousand.

I just drove the van it whining when I let off the gas as long as you keep you foot on the gas it sounds fine, it did not do that before. I suspect I may have it to tight .I think I'll back it off a half a turn. Any advice. luckybodog

one other thing I didn't notice is when I remove the drive shaft I didn't mark the way it came out so I don't know if it in the same way . I'm letting the exhaust cool before I crawl under the van again. I going to back off the pinion nut a half a turn. I'm buying a lift if my ship ever comes in. luckybodog

If you over tightened it then you have crushed the crush collar to far. If you back it off it wont be doing its job anymore.
