2000 Safari AWD install g80 or posi?

2000 Safari AWD install g80 or posi?

Postby zaneroni [OP] » November 30th 2014, 2:02pm

Hi
I have been doing a lot of reading of different topics about adding limited slip to Astro's and to be honest I became more and more confused on which is the right product to buy.

What I understood so far is that g80 is GM code for the Eaton MLOCKER unit. When I read the product information on Eaton, M-Locker is a mechanical locking system not a positraction or lmited slip.

My question is which am I better off with, the Eaton M-Locker or Eaton Posi ? I live in Minnesota and my use for it will be in deep snow service and forest dirt roads. The AWD works okay until I have to tackle over 12 - 14 inches of snow. I onlt got it stuck once in 18 inch snow drift but luckily a truck passed by and was able to pull me out. I want to avoid that situation going forward.

Thank you

The factory and the aftermarket Eaton posi's even tho they have the same name. Are completely different.
As for Eatons aftermarket posi's I own one of each. The limited slip and the detroit locker.
The detroit is what i got in the van. I like it alot. It is open untill it slips then it locks. Once you go sideways just let off the gas it unlocks and it returns to center quickly. As opposed to a limited slip with clutches which will remain engaged and the side to side action will continue.

So for traction in rain and snow I recommend the Detroit one for control. If you like to play more the other is more sideways longer. That is why it went in the chevelle. Posi is strictly to get side ways.

Factory posi wont engage if it spins to quickly. It is a lever action that locks and it isnt that strong. So if abused they rip in half easily.

There ARE upgrades for the factory units but more of a Band-Aid kinda thing, from what I've seen. Go with the aftermarket unit and you won't need to deal with any of this grief. :2:
Move along....all is well.....return to your homes.....nothing to see here.

G-80 option in a factory vehicle. It is a eaton locker.

locker and LSD (: Limited Slip Differential) are not the same animal. The GM RPO code G80 is a LSD, not a locker.

The ones in the van are a odd critter actually. They have a hooked arm that locks. And breaks and rips apart if under enough stress.

This video explains the Astro G80 Eaton automatic locking differential pretty well. As you can seethe Astro G80 does use clutch packs behind the gear plates.
