none of power locks work on 87 Astro AND side door opens and closes, holds open properly but makes awful metal on metal scraping noise.

Maybe it takes a little effort to side open and closed, but not bad.

What should I check first on power locks? Is their a fuse somewhere?

What is the best repair manual for these vans, besides a mega bucks factory manual?

It may be difficult to get ahold of a set of FSM's for the 87, but take a look on EBay, you may get lucky. If you need an owners manual, look towards the bottom of the Forum Index, you might find one that is close.

If you have a 12v tester (the type that has a light bulb in it) when the key is in ACC, test each side of each fuse. If the light bulb lights, then the fuse is good. If only one side of the fuse lights the light, then it is bad.
The fuses can be stabbed (tested) on the end that shows towards you as they sit in the fuse panel. If you find a bad fuse, be sure to replace it with the same amp rating as what is already there.

I dunno if it will help, but I added my own auto door locks from allelectronics.com. I got the solenoids and relay (the relay is $25 from advanced, btw) from them for $20, and the button from a donor astro. also, there is a relay

if you push the unlock and unlock button, and don't hear the click of the relay, replace it (assuming the fuse isn't blown in the fuse panel)

otherwise, check your wires (use a test light at the lock actuator while having the button pushed lock and then unlock)

replace faulty part(s)
