Clear coat went pink

Clear coat went pink

Postby juststartin [OP] » January 2nd 2017, 5:04pm

Something went wrong while doing a rust/gouge repair. Everything was good through the repair and multiple paint coats up until 3rd layer of clear. Can says to put on 2 light coats and then a medium heavy. When I sprayed the heavier coat it all went pink and never changed back. Contamination?
I'm using duplicolor paint, primer, and clear coat Spray cans.
Whatcha figure everyone?

I have to wonder if the paint before the clear was set up(cured)? I'd check and see if Duplicolor has a tech help line.

My dads firebird had a reaction like that. I got to enjoy doing it twice. The clear where it was over the old clear was yellowed looking. Paint looked great just had a different tint where the new paint was than where clear was over the old paint and clear. It was a repair job. He put a nasty scratch in it.

I sanded it all back down and just cleared the whole side.

Looks like a paint reaction between 2 types of paint. Contamination.

I would call the paint shop and tell them what your using see what they know. Sometimes a special cleaning agent is needed.

Let what you have cure VERY good, a day or two at least. Scuff it lightly then start dusting some white on LIGHTLY until you have covered this pink chroma up. Clear it in light coats after that. Especially the first coat, just mist a tacky coat on so the second coat will stick. Give the clear plenty of flash time, the solvent in clear is the hottest of anything and can loosen the lower coats, even the primer and give you these problems. Spray cans also have a lot of acids in them. If you pound on a super wet coat or two it can react badly. The red and pink color usually comes from something in the primer being reactivated by a really heavy coat of clear. Ford Escort and Taurus bumpers were notorious for this problem due to their factory primer being easily reactivated by the clear, especially in a heated paint booth. Clear is a decent barrier though, and now you have that barrier. Just try not to break through it when you scuff it.

I have never seen anything like that before on fresh paint. But I have spotted that before on a few fords and didn't really give it second though. Pretty wild. Thanks for the informative and interesting reply Zebediah!

I do interior painting as part of my job. So Zeb's exp adds up to me. Ive seen weird things happen. The can says you must clear coat within an hour of last paint coat. I'm betting I gave too heavy of a last paint coat so it still wasn't dry enough in the hour. So when I lightly sprayed it there was no real prob. But with the heavy clear it started to soak it's way through fast. Well it's been a week now so I think I'm safe to start over with the the clear that's on there as the block. Just gotta sand careful

I really appreciate the help

One quick question though. The clear says to lightly spray 2 coats, then 1 medium heavy. All 10-30 mins apart, and you must be done in 1 hour. Think that this is an ok method? Can I push it longer? Or should I even?

Re: Clear coat went pink

I don't rattle a lot of clear. But with matte or flat paint (camo) I find that coats closer together in time are less textured when finally cured. Coats spread out within that hour will dry a little more before the next coat. If the humidity is pretty low (usually is here) that means long waits = more texture, shorter waits = smoother, less texture.

I've seen nitro lacquer blush on musical instruments that looks really pink. Spray that with blush eraser (essentially very thin lacquer, lots of solvent) and the blush evaporates. That wouldn't work with enamel, of course, once the enamel dried.

It heavily depends on temperature and humidity too.
If it's cold where you are, a longer flash time is required.
Most of my painting has been in a tropical environment which
requires the slowest of solvents and even some retarders. You
could very easily be up against the inverse, very slow cure.
I have not used many spray cans, but they sure do some weird
stuff when it decides to go bad on you. And whatever you do,
DO NOT spray lacquer over enamel. An acrylic/Poly clear may or
may not work over enamel but whenever you anticipate a
problem, put on a very light most coat first and see what it does.
I would rather wet sand/buff the final clear than strip it and start
over. Orange peel may be better than fisheyes, spiderwebbing, runs,
solvent pop etc.

Ya I think it may work out this time, but I'm often too optimistic haha. Clear is going on in a few mins. I'm spraying acrylic enamel clear coat overtop

Yep my optimism was indeed incorrect. Pink again. I did let the paint dry longer and it's less pinkish. So progress I guess. Next time who cares about the suggested time limits. I'm giving it tons of extra dry time.
