Need help with roof rack?! Previous owner removed side rails

Postby HeatherWhatever [OP] » July 25th 2017, 9:15pm

Hi! I'm new here & also a new Astro van owner. I really need a roof rack since I'm doing the whole vanlife thing, but the previous owner removed the side rails. Can I get these from a pick & pull? How do I know which ones to get? I'm so clueless

Hi and welcome, Heather. Your profile says you have a 96 AWD....I'm not aware of any "96 only" roof rack options so you're in luck. Unless I'm wrong, the roof rack and parts thereof never changed on the entire run of EXTENDED vans so anything 96-2005 should fit. Pre-96, you MAY (Don't quote me on this) find donor parts on earlier vans.

Are you sure your van had a roof rack? Are there holes in the roof where it existed previously? There are a lot of vans that did not come with a roof rack at all!

You can remove one from one in a junk yard -- might be worth grabbing a couple extra crossbars while you there too. I'd assume anything 95 and greater would suffice. Maybe even a GEN-I Extended version would have the same rack, but I'm sure you'll be able to find a 95+ one with a rack in the JY eventually.

I had to pull my roof rack off recently for my solar install -- it involved removing and reinstalling the headliner. In other words, it's also a great time to add some insulation to the roof!!

If there are no pre-existing holes, you may want to consider an aftermarket rack -- they are a bit more robust (I think).

Also -- my roof rack hardware was pretty rusted out, so might want to consider new bolts too.
