Roof rack for gutterless roof

Roof rack for gutterless roof

Postby VanDamn [OP] » July 31st 2018, 10:25pm

My 2004 safari has a gutter less roof and my research for "gutter less roof rack" is only returning bolt-on options, is that a good idea? If not, what are my options?

Most car people I've asked say "don't drill into the roof", but I also see people this site doing it, so I'd assume you're probably doing it right and not having leaks/issues.

In that case: how do you do it and still stop leaks/etc?

I drilled holes into my roof, that's the only way to get it done.

Copious amounts of silicone on both sides

What are the absolute do's/don't's of the install? You've never had issues with leaks?

No, no leaks. Just watch what you are drilling into and you will be fine. silicone on both surfaces of the roof when installing whatever you have planned. pretty hard to mess up.

just make sure its on straight for Christ sake. there is a van rolling around town that its installed not even close to straight and it drives me bonkers every time I see it.

I too drilled and have been ok, no leaks. I also managed to hit the ribs just where I was aiming so the washers fit into the indent. Must have been pure luck cause while I prefer DIY, it is usually DIY Redneck style. Measured 10 times and then closed my eyes.

I have a rack in the works and will be drilling into the roof. I have been meaning to measure the rack support locations on my other van so I know where to drill. I can post up the factory hole locations tomorrow if that would help you out.

I put my rack on the roof marked the location then made sure the rack in strait, I drilled the holes then took 2x2 sections of plate steel drilled them put silicone on top and bottom of holes in roof added a small o ring to all bolts put the bolts through roof rack then the roof put 2x2 sections of steel on bottom of roof then added washers and nuts. van was in yard for a year while I was doing suspension and brakes mods and we had a heavy rain season and I did not have any leaks. I recently made measurements, but wasn't really focused on the roof rack mounts, though they are in there:

96382

The center of each of those cross members might be a good thing to aim for.

96370

Careful for wiring in the B and C pillar.
