'89 Door handles

'89 Door handles

Postby sturoc [OP] » January 23rd 2012, 2:35am

Just searched around but did not find anything dealing with my problem;

89 Astrovan cargo style with slider and split doors in rear.
Pass door handle now is impossible to open from the outside - yet still works from inside. Key will not lock or unlock.
Slider door handle only works, from inside and out, when it is above a certain temp outside. Key will not lock or unlock
Drivers door so far is till working good but I suspect at some point it will start going too. Key works.
Rear doors no problem right now, key works.

What is the remedy and accompanying procedures ?

Thanks in advance.

I'd start by removing the door panels, cleaning & lubricating the linkage- avoid white lithium grease at all costs. It gums up and gets stiff in the cold.

It really helps to give all the hardware a shot of liquid like WD-40, or CRC at oil change intervals. Also I give all the exposed

pieces like latches and hinges a shot of shop air before the bath, to help move some of the accumulated dirt off them.

The little red straw that comes with the can of lube is useful to poke into key slots, and handle recesses. Whether or not

the poking into the handles actually does anything, I can't be sure, but I think it helps. At least they seem to work much

better after the treatment. Dryness and dirt are the enemies.

Keep truck'n

Sorry for the delayed reply. Squirted a load of lubricant into the latch zone back when i posted and read the replies.
Now that the van has sat a few days in the cold 5-15 degs. I just tried the slider and she opened right up like it was a sunny day !
Pass door is a different story though . I can pull the handle but it does not engage anything, just kinda flappin. Sounds like surgery coming up for that one ?

Dirt and a lack of lubrication will really put a strain on the mechanisms, to a point where some of the weaker components fail, and

ultimatly break. When that time comes, it becomes a choice: new parts, or new truck. Once again: "an ounce of prevention is

worth a pound of cure" rears its' ugly head...
