Astro/Safari Rear Leaks

Astro/Safari Rear Leaks

Postby EthanWalter [OP] » May 23rd 2019, 9:44am

Anyone else here have an Chevy Astro /GMC Safari with the Dutch doors in the rear? I've had issues with them leaking the entire time I've had the van. I thinks it's clearly the weather stripping. Has anyone else had this issue and would have some tips for me? The dealership says the parts are discontinued and they are extremely hard/expensive to find online.

I'm thinking I'll need to do it myself with aftermarket universal weather stripping but there are lots of options and I don't really know where to start. Additionally, the previous owner made an attempt to fix this leak and now I don't know where to even apply stripping.

Anyone with experience with automotive weather stripping, please help.

I have the same issue. I have some of the original stripping but can't find a match anywhere.

I'm considering ordering some "Ameriseal RV Multi-Purpose Bulb Self-Adhesive Weatherstrip Seal." - https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameriseal-RV ... /537717770

I emailed 4 different seal companies and got no replies concerning seals that look close enough to use. I plan on hitting a few auto salvage yards to see if any other vehicles have something similar. I will post my findings.

My issue isn't with the rear doors leaking water, it is with dust getting in.

This is for the “bulb” weather strip.

The drip gutter along the top, is the real hard one to replace.

I looked at many vans at different pick n pulls before I found a good used drip gutter weather strip.

Yes, there are quite a few - is your Van Gen I or II ( ours is a Gen I / '92 ) and is there a different rear door seal for different Gens / years?
Our seal has major Rivets along the Top. I am almost afraid to mess w/ it as it "scrunches" when you squeeze or push at it.
Since it is a Garage Queen and NEVER gets driven in the rain - I never get to see if it is a problem.

Now, it never leaked before, but if it did and we needed to keep it as a DD - I would buy whatever starting cross section would work.
Then build it up with aftermarket weatherstrip to try and duplicate the working / Proper Profile.

I can see this... until I put in the metro moulding I listed, I used to have little mounds of snow/powder in the back when it was windy and snowing over night. The replacement seal fixed that part. My drip gutter seems to be holding up ok on this van. My last van, the drip gutter had rusted off completely.

In the last few weeks I've gone on a couple overland adventures in the desert including navigating ~300 continuos miles of dirt roads in southern Utah. By the end of the trip there was a layer of red dust over everything in the van...took a little of the red rock country home with me. My drip gutter is fine, it's the weather seal around the sides and bottom of the doors. There is no lip to attach weather stripping to. The original one was attached with little plastic thingamajigs that have all broken.

I installed the "Ameriseal RV Multi-Purpose Bulb Self-Adhesive Weatherstrip Seal" (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameriseal-RV ... /543588046). Scrubbed the door real well with acetone first. So far it seems to be working well....we'll see how long the 3m adhesive holds up. If I was to play it again, I would leave an inch at the ends and melt/form them with a heat gun.
