Steel Rod vs Plastic Rod Retainers

Hey all!

I have a 1992 GMC Safari and I need to replace the passenger door external handle which simply stopped working. When I go to buy one (here: http://www.autoandart.com/categories/GM ... side-Door/ ) I see that the 92 safari door handles can go with either a steel rod retainer or a plastic rod retainer. How am I supposed to know which one I need?

There were 2 designs that year ,, possible that either will work , but to find out what you have call a GM dealer ask for parts dept , give them the last 8 digits of your VIN and they can look it up which design your van has ,, the newer design is likely to be the same as the 93 model
