Removing roof rails

Removing roof rails

Postby pmac43 [OP] » February 21st 2012, 2:42am

I own a 1987 Astro and a local salvage yard has a 94 Astro with some roof rails on the top that I want on mine since my van has no roof rails. My ? is do you have to remove the interior roof to get to some bolts to remove it?? Or can it be taken off from the top? I don't know if it'd be worth the trouble or just have a new set custom fabbed for myself. If you look in my pics my van has a spoiler on it that I think looks stupid so if anyone out there or in Nebraska (lincoln area) would wanna buy it for cheap lemme know cuz I wanna remove it. I just don't wanna ruin my head boards! So anyone taken a roof rail off?

Usually the factory roof rails can be unscrewed from the top , a star bit I think is what is needed , they often used jack nuts to install them ,, but it may be bolted through the roof in some cases

My 89 OEM rack came off from the top with a star driver. Didn't need to go inside. Others here have reported a different mounting system, I think on newer vans, that require insidedness.

However, my bolts were corroded all to heck and I ended up cutting them between the foot of the rack and the roof sheet metal.

Fabbing up a custom rack would get my vote, no matter how easy it was to get the flimsy factory rack off.

Would think in terms on how much weight you plan to use with it ,, Mine handles a good bit , but mostly just used for boxes or sometimes small dia pipe or wood , mine is a factory version , I wouldn't push it too hard though as i looked at what holds them in I found that there are 2 different versions; the bolts that mount them are they are listed as

Thanks for all the feedback. I saw the star bits on top but wasnt sure if that just dismantled the bars from what fastens it to the roof. Plus I didn't have that tool, but now I think I'll go back next week and try to get em off! If the price is right anyways...
