High Roof Swap???

Re: High Roof Swap???

So finished the roof swap, It’s been done for a month or so and wanted to update some photos and how the whole thing turned out.

Cutting into the roof with the sawsall was super fun.
Ended up chopping out 2 support crossbars.

I placed the roof in place and traced where it would sit with a bic pen. Then I lined the entire area it would contact with roll out putty caulking **** (usually used to add fans and such to Rvs, I forget the name). Put the roof on top, then screwed it on with about 200 self tapping screws. Followed by white caulking around the whole perimeter and over the screw heads.

after about a month and 1000+ miles on the road I got to say I have not noticed any difference in “wobbliness” or lack of support. It is driving just as solid as before.

Apoulstering (Sp?) the inside was a whole bag of PITA bread, but came out better than I expected.

This was a super random project that I never heard of anyone else doing before, but I am super delighted with the way it came out. It gives us some much needed headroom in the van (we can actually tip back a beer fully) And leaving the front and back original roof uncut provides two awesome storage areas to cut down on clutter. If anyone is making an attempt and has a question hit me up, I’m more than happy to give advice!!!

Great job! Cool install -- I love that style of hightop too... you can turn that into a pop-top a la Gavio!!

Nice job!

Quick question: Is there a reason why you didn't make it a pop-top?

Right on, thanks yall!!!

Hippovan- I thought about the pop top, but I honestly think it would have been sooooo much more complicated (latches, seals, struts, canvas). Since this was pulled from another same gen astro, it essentially bolted directly on. I thought I was going to "total" the car at a few points because I have ZERO experiencing doing anything like this, but I got lucky and it worked out pretty damn good.

Pop-top is so much more effort. I have been planning my pop-top build for almost a year, and it's still a long ways off. If a high top works for your needs, it's a much more straightforward approach.

Nice work!
I don't know how much variety is in these tops, but it looks very close to the one on my van.
Lining looks good too, was that from the donor as well?

?? Well, yeah...
.

Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... “May be hard to believe... President Trump should rest easy and concede what was in fact a foregone conclusion: Another OLD MAN won with only about 50% of the Change Believers/Fools showing up."
