Installing Roof Top Tent, Do I need to change stock rack?

Installing Roof Top Tent, Do I need to change stock rack?

Postby JoeJITSU [OP] » June 18th 2020, 10:50pm

Also does anyone know the Dynamic Weight Capacity for the roof? Seems like the only thing I can find is on the Yakima site that says 175lbs for 1995 GMC Safari van.

Do I need to swap out my stock roof racks for a better heavy duty one?

Yes, absolutely. The stock roof rack isn't up to much weight.

Build one like Jack (cargocrawler) did and mount the tent to that.

I’ll 2nd that
You’ll want a beefy set up for a roof top tent. You could easily get 300-400 lbs up there with 2 people plus the weight of the tent

The roof isn’t strong enough to support that and the rack needs to pass through the roof skin and tie into the roof structure

Hey man, where are you located? I know people in Northern California who might be able to assist.

I'm in Las Vegas. As we do our regular camping because we plan to go North, we may be able to stop by. Do you know how long something like that would take?

Have you seen CargoCrawlers thread?

https://www.astrosafari.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13597

I'm assuming it would take awhile, but maybe they can borrow an A/S and then just transfer it for you when you arrive?

When I had a large rtt, I added additional crossbars from the salvage yard to the stock rack. Think I had four crossbars under the rtt and went through the side rails and replaced some of the nutserts that were loose with nuts, bolts and washers on each side. It's in a thread here somewhere or on ExPo.

It was fine and very solid with the rtt tent mounted and kept the rtt mounted as low profile to the roof as you could get with still being able to get to the rtt mounting hardware. I didn't have any concerns with that or two people sleeping up there. It made a tall (lifted) van taller and didn't really like that though probably would've been a bit better with the rear swaybar. That and my van didn't fit in my garage with the rtt so it was a pain to take down and put back up there, plus the mpg hit and not enough use so I sold it.

I’d do it but ever since I screwed up my wife’s van before, shell never let me touch her van again and quite honestly fabricating is not my thing.
