Headlight cleaning and/or replacing

Headlight cleaning and/or replacing

Postby AstroOafAdventurer [OP] » August 29th 2020, 6:37pm

So I was told on my pre-purchase inspection my headlights would fail inspection.
Do they clear up easily enough, or should I replace them?
I have 1000, 1500, & 2000 grit sandpaper to knock the haze off, but just as well I'd like to replace them with some modern higher candle power headlights.
What have you guys done, and what would you recommend?
I'd like an HID/LED/projector setup, but I've only seen one brand and seems hit or miss.

Hella makes a sealed beam replacement that takes an H4 bulb. I used a 55/100 bulb that is regular brightness on low beam and almost twice as bright on high beam. Best headlights I have ever used.

I don't have the sealed beams, wish I did for the ease of upgrading.

New headlight assemblies are pretty cheap, much cheaper than anything I've owned before.
Cheap enough I may just buy a pair and try a DIY projectors in place of the high beams

Do you have aftermarket lights? Both my vans are Denso lights and are very clear. I haven't had the 04 long, but the 95 I've had for 6 years now. Just curious if they might be originals and aftermarket ones have yellowing issues.

I recently bought a set of eBay headlights. split them open and did a Morimoto mini H1 bi-xenon hid projector retrofit. It was a giant pain in the but but the light output is great

I’ve been meaning to make a post about it...

But the main issue I had was the projector depth is longer than the composite lens so it look some fabrication for it to work

Also the factory lens are “fluted”. So they will disrupt the projector beam.
You have to get euro style clear lens

So the OP is asking about passing an inspection.. Depending on what state and what things they are checking for, Changing the headlights to an aftermarket may not be allowed. Just FYI... Composite systems are a bit harder to deal with but there are lots of OE fit units. Be aware of LED bulbs that are not SAE/DOT certified. they tend to be real horrible with the projection and cut off of glare. I did find however that GM actually used Glide lenses as well as their own GM brand. (bought both from various sources) I found the throw pattern on the Glide version was better than the GM stamped lenses (the Glide lens came in the GM labeled box, and the housing on the back actually had the GM part number in the casting with the "Glide" labeled lens)

So first thing for the OP is to verify if the safety inspection will be looking for modifications.

Then the second question is how much they are willing to spend or if they really want an OE look with a brighter controlled output.

according to the morimoto website these mini H1 projectors are NOT street legal so if you are trying to pass inspection, you may need to do something else. I won't advocate for you to do anything illegal but you can make your own choices.

Hey, so I saw a few posts, it appears to be easy to swap to the Safari grill. I find this highly interesting.
However, how is it swapping from composite to sealed beam headlights?
I found a decent pair of Lumen LED sealed beams that are DOT/SAE on CarID.

I tried searching but all results are from sealed beam to composite.
I'm digging this grill

I had the H4 conversion sealed (not) beam headlights in my watchlist for months. One of those "some day" things.

Then I compared the price of them to the THREE sets of aux lighting I've bought for less recently. And took them off my watch list.

Huh, yeah, and the specific headlight only appears to be available from them. A lumen CariD exclusive or something maybe.
Funky looking headlight but I dig the halo as DRLs.
Thanks for the heads up

i don't know if your sheetmetal panel behind the grill is punched for the sealed beam mounts & grill - it would take a junkyard trip to investigate.
i did change from an astro to safari sealed beam grill and the screw holes for mounting them are the same.
also did a billet grill insert that looks nice, i got the insert on eBay, don't have the listing, it was a couple of years ago.

Hella makes DOT grade headlights that fit the sealed beam buckets - i like them, the low beam is wider to the sides, and you can use the high wattage bulbs mentioned above by dramey.
