Here is mine, I went with this design cause I wanted it to not stick out a ton in the front and have a hoop for grill protection

I also make a skid plate that goes under the front of the bumper to the transfer case102436102434102432

Thanks! It’s a mix of 1/8 and 3/16

It has lots of carefully thought bracing so it hopefully crumples a bit of it hit a tree or something but will hold up to a deer

Re: Lets see your custom bumpers

Postby Rod's Trucks » September 5th 2020, 10:49pm

Dit,
I really like that look.
I have looked at some of the swinging spare tire racks the Jeep guys use, to get some ideas; but the Jeeps seem to built with that idea ( and substantial overhead roof racks) in mind, so the mounting locations are beefy enough to support that.
I would never need more than one fuel can, but I can see myself building a platform for a small generator ( Honda EU-1000) in place of the extra fuel cans.
What is all that weight pivoting on? Surely not on the door hinges...?
15 potential gallons of fuel are on the far end of the pivoting arm, and the tire also! I would think that is a major load on whatever is used for the pivot.
Designed well, it should be just fine; but I can also see the potential for twisting the bumper assembly when the assembly is wide open, and all the weight is hanging directly out the back.

I would really love to see a couple more pic's of the hinge mechanism.
Thanks :ty:

Rod. I rarely carry a full 15 gals except on long off highway trips to places like Utah and the Great Basin where making a round trip to the nearest gas station breaks up the adventure. It is a lot of weight. That said I have been running this on pretty rough roads for ~ten years now with no issue.

I purposely built the gas rack modularly with the intention of fabricating a box module at a later date, but.... never really got around to painting it either.

The pivot is an 1 1/8" grade 8 bolt through thick walled tubing with pivot anchors bottom and top of 1/4" plate welded to 2 x 2 square tube. Sorry about the (c), my program auto applies the symbol.

Picked up steel, got it all welded up. Polishing out the welds, still need to make some mounting brackets and add some tow holds. Not bad for a weekend

Birdshake says " Not bad at all'

I say it looks damn good! Nice work for a weekend. I am always jealous of those with the skills and tools to both to design and fabricate such projects, quickly.
I know it is not 'complete' but the bumper is done.

I will never understand the idea of covering the license plate online when in fact the world around you see's it daily when you drive so what's the difference between the two? online or driving?
