There is a thread from the early days of the site. There are baffles in the tank. For overseas fire retardant. Punch the baffles out and the tank holds 40 gallons if you already have the 27 gallon one.
As for a auxiliary tank the best place I would think to mount one would be where the spare tire is. Like Lt1astro mounted his fuel cell. It would have to be custom. I don't think it been done.

27 gallons. Early one came with 27 gals, then 99 and at least 2 other years came with 25, then back to 27.

My 93 & 02 have 27 gal tanks, the 99 has an 25 gal tank.

My 88 shortie has a 17 gallon tank. Would a Gen II tank fit though?

Why not see if a 90's tank will fit? My '93 EXT has a 27 gallon. I don't know if there's enough room under a shortie, though, never having slid underneath one.

Maybe it was. If so you got me good. I took it hook line and sinker.

I just read it out of the middle of a thread searching for something else.

Hey guys,

Once upon a time, I tried putting 40 gallons in a 27 gallon tank. It turned out exactly the same as when I tried peeing into the wind.

(Got my shoes wet.) I hope you have better luck than I did.

40 gallons? I have a 27 gallon on my '93 EXT and I only put 5 gallons in. It costs almost $100 to fill it.

I'll make a bet that w/o the spare under the truck (ie: mounted on the back door) there would be room to cobble some sort of extra

tank. However, It would have to be one that has all the garbage to be compatable with the FI system. Then, there is the "where do

we put the filler, if in fact it ain't quite at the right place to begin with ???" When I had an FJ 40 Bobtail Toyota, I mounted a tank

in that particular cavity. But it was out of a CJ 5 Jeep, and of course there were no connections to be made except to the existing

plumbing incorporating a selector valve and the fill plumbing, which was nowhere as complicated back then either, to a hole in the

backside of the flat panels of the wheelwell area. Gave me almost 45 gal total, hooeee ! Even so, the SMC didn't give me much

better MPG than the straight six did but I could tie on to a house and pull it off its' foundation in Low gear (411 rears) ! BTW, Did I

ever tell you all I used to fish on the Outer Banks ?

I dont see why the 27 gallon wouldnt work. The only difference between shorty and ext. is the extra length at the rear. I have pro streeted both, pretty much the same, just the ext. is longer behind the rear wheels.

I mounted a aluminum tank where the spare tire should be, holds about 17 gallons. It was mounted and made to be hidden, doesnt hang below bumper. I also removed floor bracing to make it fit.

I pro streeted my Astro, no room for tank in stock location.

I am using an aftermarket electric fuel pump.
A tank can be mounted in the spare tire area, but kinda expensive. Know idea how it would be hooked into the stock tank.

I have a 44 gallon tank in my Suburban. Its nice to stand in the cold and fill er up. Takes forever and costs a small mint. ($165 )Plus It makes my truck so much heavier. It will cost you extra MPG's just to carry around the extra weight. I wont be upgrading my tank anytime soon.

A spare tank sure beats the alternatives, especially if you are going in the outback where it may be difficult to find a fueling station.

I would opt for a small out of tank pump that would be piped to the Return Line of the main tanks' plumbing. It would be easier

than trying to parallel all the garbage that the truck comes with. Flip a switch when you get to 1/4 tank and watch the gage

fill up. Have a red lighted switch to tell you the spare pump is energised, or a check valve and a pressure switch in the wiring to

cut the pump off when the pressure drops. Don't want to burn the pump out. Sounds in the realm of doable now that I'm thinking

out the kinks. Just need to find the right application stock tank to fit, and have all the plumbing at all the right places, rather

than have to build one from scratch. A small CJ tank might just be worth looking at, or a small rice burner...

I was thinking about the aluminum tank idea also except that I could see fabricating a replacement tank has the same shape of the stock tank but it's a little longer on both ends to give you the additional 13 gallons.
