grille/brush/bull Guard & roof light bar

grille/brush/bull Guard & roof light bar

Postby jimi_b [OP] » February 12th 2010, 11:55am

Greeting Members:

I can't tell everyone how happy I was to find this website, I thought I was weird for loving my gmc safari so much. Now I feel like I'm in good company and I don't need therapy. I would like to propose a question to the group. I have searched long and hard for offroad accessories to no avail. I want a grille/brush/bull guard and roof light rack/bar for my 98. I was hoping to find someone else made these mods and might have plans for a good brush guard and light rack. I am a little confused on how I would even mount either one on this model. Any pictures and instructions would be greatly appreciated especially on installing and fabricating the guard and bar.

Are there any guards I can buy for other vehicles that would work on the 98 such as a s10 jimmy or do I have to weld and bend my own? Same question on the light rack.

Thank you
Jimi

Re: grille/brush/bull Guard & roof light bar

Postby tedanderson » February 12th 2010, 12:33pm

Welcome to the forum!

There is a van accessories shop in my area that I plan on visiting to see what they have. One thing that makes our vans a little challenging when it comes to roof mounted accessories (like a light bar or ladder rack) is that there are no rain gutters. I imagine that a brush guard can be installed with a minimal amount of modification. If the bar is wider or narrower than the frame, it probably will take some shimming up with a couple of blocks. I'll ask around and maybe take some pic of some vans with these accessories.

you can buy one for a 98-2000 chevy 1500 which is what i've seen on the astros, you are gonna need to cut holes in your bumper to get the brackets trough and also drill holes on the subframe to mount them, i am planning on upgrading my own here very soon (tax money) and ill do a write up on it.

I will wait for your write up then and hopefully a few pics. I hope it goes smooth because they look great on them. I looked under the front end and just could not see how to mount one. I am glad someone else is doing the same thing. Thanks for the reply. jimi_b

That's nice! I want one!

I went to a couple of van shops and a custom truck shop today but nobody could help. I even entertained the idea of modifying something designed for another vehicle but nobody was interested in selling me one. So I figured that I'll have to make one myself if I want one. I found the guard in the above pic on a couple of websites but they are designed for the full sized Express vans. This guy probably took 6 inches out of the middle and welded it back.

No, he didn't cut out 6" in the middle and weld it back together. They look identical, even width.

I'm sold on the brush guard idea for sure after that picture! Gonna be a little harder on a Gen 1 Van though as we have a more solid bumper. If I see a cheap pushbar on craigslist for sale I going to make it work!

finally got my pushbar it is a westin sportsmans series model 40-1465, black. for a 2004 chevy avalanche. i found it at a local pawn shop and decided to get it hey for $80.00 bucks i cant go wrong :D i just had to sand it down in a couple of spots and re-paint since it had some rust spots, but hey is cheaper than buying one new for about $450.00 bucks, i will be installing it this upcoming sunday HOPEFULLY and do a write up on it. and with the money i saved i bought a set of hella 500ff driving lights to go on the push bar...

Just joined and have been looking for ideas to add to my van. As for the brush guard I am still looking on methods to mount one. For the roof lighting all I did was buy a third roof rack cross bar with the sliders from a scrapped van. I installed the sliders to my van and rounded the corners so that when loosened the entire bar will come off for going into parking garages etc. I then drilled the 4 holes into the cross bar to install the lights. I know its late but hopefully that helps someone.
