Removing Running Boards, Trim, and Luggage Rack?

Removing Running Boards, Trim, and Luggage Rack?

Postby boxfetish [OP] » May 27th 2010, 8:01am

I have a chance to a buy a pretty nice 93 AWD Safari. No rust and interior is immaculate. Only thing is it is one that comes with factory running boards, side molding, and luggage rack. You may say that's a good thing but I really don't like how those things look on these vans. What I am wondering is how big of a pain in the *** is it to permanently remove those things? If I were to remove the luggage rack, running boards, and side molding would I be faced with dozens of holes in the body that I would then have to fill and paint? I assume there would be holes with the luggage rack but what about the other two? Are the running boards mounted to the frame or the body? Is the side molding glued on or would there be holes drilled under it too? I guess I am trying to gauge whether or not I should buy and remove these items or if I should just keep looking until I find a CS or base model van that doesn't have any of those features.

Thanks!

Good Looking Van...

See here for roof rack removal: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6910#p60881

See here for Body side moulding: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6462&start=0

Running boards oughta be easy and undetectable once removed.

Save all that good stuff for sale here. It'll get ya a buck or two.

Good Luck and Keep us posted. Jim

Make sure when you pull the running boards to paint or seal the mounting holes so they don't start rusting.

Good luck on making it a cleaner looking van.

The luggage rack on my 89 removed entirely from the outside. It was
secured with rubber expanding insert nuts. No need to pull the headliner
to reach the inside of the fastener. But others have posted that theirs
does require inside access.

I don't know about the other trim parts you mention.

Some of the best racks I've seen are at Trader Joe's in Scottsdale.
