Yes Or No? Fiberglass Top

Yes Or No? Fiberglass Top

Postby vandrew [OP] » October 2nd 2015, 9:32pm

First of all....HELLO VAN ENTHUSIASTS!!! When my girlfriend bought a '93 Previa and converted it to a sleep/somewhat live-in shack, she broadened my horizons and here I am 6 months later wanting to do the same thing with the Astro. I've narrowed down my options towards the Astro from other vans well because...well you all know why and that's why we're here! Taking the van upwards of 300k is what I'm interested in. I'm looking for 6 cyl AWD vans really under 6 grand and probably between the years '94 and '00. (Should I go for newer? Why?) I've been doing my reading the past few months on Astro vans. Any input in any area you see fit to give me advice on would be soaked in. Ok so I'm looking for a High Top variant, which come to find out is a heck of a lot harder to find than the Flat Top variants. Should I buy a Flat Top model for a good price and install a High Top Roof? Here's some links.

Sweet van I would LOVE to buy right here. Already has the High Top I want.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/52 ... 33638.html

Alternatively, I could get a van like this:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5244931752.html

Then insall a roof like this:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/pts/5245206079.html

I should let you all know that whichever option I choose I plan to have a big (as big as I can get at least) Sliding Ragtop (for cruising speeds or parked only) professionally installed with lifetime warranty. I checked with the company and the warranty is in full effect if they OK the aftermarket High Top Roof. Alright that's pretty much it. Thanks

First CL link is dead.

Any Astro/Safari 95 or newer is a long body. 94 could be short or long. 03 - 05 had a few changes like rear disc brakes, 16 inch wheels instead of 15. Fuel intake systems on all these vans varied a lot over the years. Throttle body, Central point induction, Multi point induction maybe others.

95 was a changeover year between the Gen I vans and the Gen II vans. Some suggest to stay away from that year because of the "*******" of parts.

If I was going to install a hi top on a plain van, I'd want to be very sure I knew exactly how to do it and that it was well within my skillsets OR know what it would cost to have someone do it. It's a pretty big project. There's a thread or two here on that. Member Gary could probably shed some light.

There are more second gen vans around now too which usually means more parts available, second gen started in 1996 (some consider 95's as 2nd gen but I don't) you most likely will find more AWD versions in states that have snow and ice in winter. As for the raised roof models thats just hit or miss, try looking for conversion van websites that may be a better place to look then craigslist Welcome and good luck, Mark.

Thanks for answering my questions even though they are basic ones. The information was helpfui. Hopefully by January I'll have just come across a high top at the right place at the right time. Cheers!

The blue roof in SF has been there a long time. I've seen it listed for at least 4 -5 months. Bet he'd take an offer now.

Here's the first link; looks like it was doubled in the code somehow.

off topic here, but, my heart is still set on the astro! no vehicle in hand yet, but i live life one day at a time and i'm feeling the purchase coming in a few months. in the mean time...check this out. i am going to inquire about getting a fiberglass roof made, and at the same time manufacture it to hold a big sliding ragtop roof right in the middle. i'm talkin big. don't know if that's possible, but if it is......if not? i'll pick up the blue on on the san jose craigslist, is it?

as for the reason of this update? well, i've been feeling very tropical, and as i spend my days thinking about what i'm going to do to my astro, it hits me... replacing the stock carpet with TURF. ASTRO. it was meant to be. vandrew out
