If you ever have to completely pull the dash -- doing the entire thing in bedliner would look great!

Best Radio opening I've seen yet! Awesome work.

I think it would too, hopefully I never have to pull the dash!

These came in today, they will be living in the rear doors in custom boxes.

I think the way it is now would look better than all black. if I had to pull the whole thing, I would replace it with an '80s dashboard lol but Im not a huge fan of the later dashboards

how youve painted it really helps it look better.

The dash looks great, I agree with leaving just that section black, looks nice two-toned.

Postby 1lowcab [OP] » March 31st 2018, 12:56am

Got the 2 way 8" speakers in.

It's not how I wanted to do it, I wanted to build boxes that fit into the doors but I forgot about the licenses plate box  oh well.
I'll be doing away with that in a future mod....... 8-)

Anyway, heres what I came up with.

Before
IMG_20180330_142344360.jpg

Old 6.5" puny speakers
IMG_20180330_142926700.jpg

Metal cut to fit the new, larger speakers
IMG_20180330_160213703.jpg

Sealed up with sound deadening
IMG_20180330_160943640.jpg

Liquid nailed
IMG_20180330_163603177.jpg

1/4" plywood cut to fit the recess with new, larger speakers installed. Plywood screwed to the metal of the door.
IMG_20180330_182436974.jpg

Original door panel installed.
I'm going to re-carpet the door panels and cut the speaker openings better, but it is what it is for right now.
IMG_20180330_183310824_TOP.jpg

And the after shot
IMG_20180330_185755173.jpg

I wanted the speaker placement to be more to the center and higher but that damned plate box is RIGHT in the way...can't wait to delete that thing.

The new speakers put out WAY more mid-bass then those 6.5's could ever dream of making.
All in all I'm happy...for now. lol!

The dash/radio combo came out great. Looks better 2 yoned off like you did. :)
Rear door speaker arrangement came out good too. Nice job on that. Did you add a sub woofer in the front edge of the right tire hump?
The sound quality should be very good now inside that space now.

Sorry I missed that. But then it might have been late when I was lurking thru your build. Even when you were doing the engine swap, it wasn't very clear with the parts inside.

Thanks! It's pretty easy to fab up that 2 din opening, you should have no problems making a copy of it.

Yeah, for some reason my camera would freak out when I'd take a shot of the inside, that and I had all those parts sitting everywhere, lol!

Got my alignment done the other day, now I can actually take it on extended runs.

Just got back from a 150 mile round trip with it (it drove flawless, love it), I was tracking mpg the whole way.
I haven't checked the mpg with this new engine yet...until today.

I averaged 18.3 mpg round trip holding pretty much 63mph the whole time! And thats with a short jaunt of city driving too....I can live with that!

Not really done..it'll never be "done". :D

Next up is bringing the AC back to life, then the windows are going darker, then custom front and rear steel plate bumpers, but right now I'm in the middle making the majority of the interior black.

Then I need to add some sort of ditch lights, when I'm out on trails at night I would like more light cast to the sides, still thinking on how I want to incorporate that....I have a few ideas I'm kicking around.

So my windshield wipers have been acting funky lately, on delay the timing would change on its own from full on to long delay periods.

I went out today and pulled the pulse board to check for bad solder joints.

At least it's easy to get to
IMG_20180416_122646575.jpg

Unplug it
IMG_20180416_122722706.jpg

Remove the 3 T15 screws and pull the cover
IMG_20180416_122828065.jpg

Grab the board by the connector and give it a little tug and it pops right out
IMG_20180416_122849170_HDR.jpg

Heres the board
IMG_20180416_122852626_HDR.jpg

I went over the whole board with my loupe and noticed maybe 2 cracked joints, they weren't cracked all the way around but I reflowed them anyway.

I DID notice this right away tho, a little corrosion right where the board plugs into the motor
IMG_20180416_123206499.jpg

And the same corrosion on the board side
IMG_20180416_123246339.jpg

I cleaned the motor and board contacts with some fine emery cloth, sprayed them down with contact cleaner and blew it out with some canned air. I also reflowed those contact points on the board.

Put all back together and gave it a test, it still works but I'm going to have to wait till it rains to see if it fixed the delay problems.

You can buy these boards new for around $25, Dorman Help Wiper Motor Pulse Board Part #88136
But why spend the money when you can fix it for FREE!!
