It’s taking me forever to get good pics of my van, but it looks really good. Thanks Uwharrie for paving the way.

I was going to get some glamour shots, but the rain came back and I had to rush after work to get my van to a covered garage since the paint wasn’t totally dry.

Good thing there is a mall near me with covered parking that won’t tow you overnight. Was $12 well spent if you ask me!!

Ok took her out to Point Molate for a joy ride. It’s a weird little defunct military area in Richmond.

Got some shots! So happy with how it turned out.

Still need to paint the inside of the box. Can’t decide between grey or black. I’ll definitely paint the backside of the door black, though.

Bondo work on the fender came out nice when painted. It ain’t perfect, but it’s close. Body work is hard and I don’t particularly enjoy it. The amateur hour would definitely show if it was clear coated and shiny.

I’ll get some under the van shots when I get it to Coppa’s shop next week. WinnieVan is getting a NP233!

Man that looks awesome! Good work!

I'd paint the inside a fun color. Like orange!

I nearly painted it black until I thought about that. I think I’ll stick with some sort of grey or tan. They make tan bedliner, which would probably look pretty darn good.

Just leaving this as a note to self mostly as my fan is starting to growl and I'm heading to the PickNPull tomorrow for 50% off days!

Not bad for $20!!

Now I just need to pair it up with a case, which there are plenty listed in my area on car-part.com.

WinnieVanII -- 2004 Astro AWD Build

Postby WinnieVan [OP] » June 24th 2019, 6:29am

Well I was hoping to do my 4x4 conversion this weekend but the JY I’ve been in contact with for the 231C went radio silence on me on Saturday. Guess they took the day off.

Instead, I replaced my axle seals and ball joint.

Sorry I’ve no pictures. Had to lend my phone to a friend for the weekend and I don’t have any other camera! Just a text update for those of you following along at home.

Each one of my Mevotech ball joint boots was blown out — it’s been like 10K since my front end rebuild. I chalk it up to user error. I think I over-greased them. No way four ball joint boots popped in that amount of time — if it was the part, I’m sure we’d be hearing more about it given how many have used their front end kit. First time for everything, I guess.

Nevertheless, I went with Moog Problem Solvers this time. Got all four ball joints for about $35 bucks using Amazon warehouse deals. Usually these deals are too good to be true, but “like new, missing box, repackaged” is what I went for. Figured this is fine for a ball joint since it’s difficult to tell if it’s bad without installing it — and there’s no way any of these were installed and then removed. All the hardware packages were in tack and unopened. Went in without a hitch. These Moogs seem higher quality that the Mevotech supreme stuff.

My SureTrack CV axles, however, I do not recommend to anyone. The one on my drivers side was so extended when I installed it — it finally wore a pinhole in the boot — again after only 10k miles. They’re just too short. I’d look elsewhere if I were you! The new A1 Cardone’s are probably better if you ask me.

I went with NAPA reman (thanks Leeann) this time and I’m very happy with the fitment. They look great and sit nicely in the axle seals and the boots are not over-extended whatsoever.

My axles seals have been weeping since I did my rebuild. I’ll chalk this up to user error again, as the FSM says in red: “do not lubricate the axle seals for inserting the CV axle”. I greased the **** out of them when I did my front end.

I replaced the axle seals with the OE parts. Used the new “inspection plate” for the drivers side too — didn’t want to make any errors reinstalling that seal the second time around. Hopefully this’ll do the trick and my axle seals will stop weeping!! Who knows though... it seems like a common problem on GM IFS vehicles.

I lubricated everything: hit my sway bar bushings and end link bushings with a healthy application of prothane grease, put some Teflon grease on my control arm bushings, and normal old greasey-grease in all the ball and socket joints.

And for the first time since BEFORE I decided to rebuild my front end the first time around; my front end is silent!! Again, I think this one is user error... I probably didn’t seat the ball joints properly or something.. or maybe it was all the extra greasing I did on the sway bar. Who cares, silence is a good thing from a front end.

Also decided to drop my torsion bar lift about 1/2”. The van is pretty raked now, but it’s way more comfortable driving around like this. I figure if I hit a really gnarly trail, I’ll just crank them up and then bring them back down when I’m back on the highway — but I rarely hit gnarly trails.

Dropping her off at Firestone tomorrow — making the most of that lifetime alignment package.
